November 10, 2022
Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:
It has been a wonderful week of experiences at school! Throughout last week, many of our classes engaged in learning more about the "Día de los muertos," through a visual representation, a video, and conversations. We are grateful to our community members who helped make this rich learning opportunity possible! Please click here for photos and a video that shows this collaboration.
As a way to acknowledge and celebrate National Native American Heritage Month, our fourth and fifth graders had the opportunity to participate in an assembly on Wednesday morning with Laughing Fox, a gifted Anishnaabe storyteller and poet. He enthralled the students with music and stories, and they had great questions for him. See here for some photos.
It was great to connect with many families last Thursday night, at the PTO Family Fun Fitness night. It was a beautiful night under the stadium lights. I hope to see many of you at our PTO-sponsored "Student Mental Health Presentation for Caregivers" next Tuesday evening, as well as at the Kindergarten Talent Development Science Night on Thursday. Please see below for more information.
Excitement was in the school and as students boarded the buses this morning, as our second graders went to Westwood Hills Nature Center, and our third graders ventured to the Bell Museum.
Thank you for sharing your amazingly brilliant and wonderful children with us. Have a great week, keep reading, and thank you for your support of our school and our community.
In collaboration,
Corey

Thank you, School Psychologists!
Our school psychologists partner with families, teachers, school administrators, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments that strengthen connections between home, school, and the community. They apply expertise in mental health, learning, and behavior to help children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. They are also important members of school safety and crisis teams.
This year's theme, “Together We Shine,” honors the hope we feel after several challenging years and emphasizes the power of our collective efforts to overcome difficulties to ensure that all our students can thrive in school, at home, and in life. While we all have our own individual strengths and attributes, we shine even brighter when we all bring our ideas and actions together to uplift the community. Through collaboration, we can empower students and adults to find purpose and possibility, all while fostering resilience. This is especially important for those who are or who feel marginalized, unrecognized, or at risk.
From all of us at St. Louis Park Public Schools, thank you, Dr. Crystal Grow, Dr. Dan Phillipe, and Katie Lail, our awesome school psychologists!

High Rates of Illness at School
Stay Home When Sick and Slow the Spread of Illness
We are seeing unusually high rates of illness in multiple SLP schools, in particular, influenza (flu) and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). These viruses can be easily spread through close contact when people cough, sneeze, and talk.
Please help partner with us in an effort to prevent the spread of illness by following our illness guidelines:
Situations when your child should stay home:
- Fever of 100 degrees or more. The student should stay home for 24 hours after their temperature returns to normal without the use of fever reducing medication.
- Vomiting or diarrhea. The student is to stay home until 24 hours after the last episode.
- Any uncontrolled cough.
- Rashes with unknown causes. Check with your family physician/clinic before your student returns to school.
- If feeling ill/unwell and the student is unable to fully participate in school activities.
If your child displays symptoms of influenza or RSV, you can reach out to your child’s health care provider to see if testing for these illnesses is recommended. For information about influenza and RSV please refer to the Parent Fact Sheets from Hennepin County Public Health:
-
Influenza information can be found HERE
-
RSV Information can be found HERE
Thank you for helping to prevent the spread of illness.

View the COVID-19 webpage for more information on COVID-19 guidance.

St. Louis Park High School Theatre Presents Chicago: Teen Edition
Kander and Ebb’s Chicago is a scathing social commentary on our national obsession with violence and fame. Based on the 1926 play by Maurine Dallas Watkins, the musical follows Roxie Hart, whose crime of passion lands her on Merry Murderesses Row, sharing the spotlight with vaudeville icon and fellow felon Velma Kelly. To keep their names in the headlines and themselves off death row, Roxie and Velma rely on lawyer Billy Flynn to “razzle dazzle” the jury and the press core. Please note that Chicago: Teen Edition represents adult situations and is not appropriate for a young audience.
Performances are November 11, 12, 18, and 19 at 7:00 pm and November 13 and 20 at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for students and senior citizens, and free with student ID for all SLPHS students. Please purchase tickets at https://gopark.hometownticketing.com/embed/all. No cash will be accepted at the venue.

Give to the Max Day 2022!
The PSI PTO is participating in the 2022 Give to the Max Day fundraising campaign, Thursday, Nov. 17. Give to the Max is a statewide giving event that raises millions each year for Minnesota nonprofits, and offers organizations like ours the chance to win additional grants from a prize pool of more than $100,000.
We recognize that many families gave to the Leer-a-tón recently, for which we are so appreciative. If you missed donating to Leer-a-tón or find your family in a position to give again you could help us win additional grant money. Each donation made through GiveMN.org, now until the 17th, no matter the size, gives the PTO an opportunity to win grants from the prize pool, including a chance to win the $10,000 grand prize grant.
This is our first year actively participating in Give to the Max and we have set an ambitious goal of 50 donations made leading up to and on Give to the Max Day, Nov. 17th. You can give online by visiting the PSI PTO GiveMN page.

Leer-a-tón Exceeds Fundraising Goals!
To date Leer-a-tón has raised more than $22,700 for the Amity Intern Program! Congratulations students, and thank you families for your incredible generosity! We crushed our goal of $20,000, and it’s time to celebrate! Students, get ready to cheer during the students-versus-teachers basketball game during the next assembly! Individual winners will be announced before the Thanksgiving break.
This is the final reminder to celebrate your child’s reading efforts. Please submit reading minutes in the Leer-a-tón Google form. Donations can still be made with cash, checks made payable to “PSI PTO”, or via PayPal at http://psiparents.com/give. Place cash/checks in an envelope marked “Leer-a-tón” and return to the PSI main office or in your child’s orange folder. Donations are tax deductible and receipts available upon request in the office.

If you are interested in learning more, check out a list of commonly asked questions in the Host Family FAQs 2022-23. ¡Bienvenida, Lisbeth Villalobos!
A special thank you to Aaron Williams and Cassie Boll for hosting Lisbeth this semester! And thank you to the following cousin families: Darlene & Jake Kuykendall and Jana & Andrew Janis. Lisbeth is assisting 2nd grade classrooms this fall.
My name is Lisbeth Villalobos Melendez. I was born on September 15, 2000 in El Salvador. I am 21 years old. I am a student at Gerardo Barrios University. I am studying for a Bachelor's Degree in English. This year I had the opportunity to participate in a virtual internship, teaching physical science at Collinsville High School located in Illinois for 4 months. It was a fantastic experience that has motivated me to learn the different techniques and methodologies that education has in the United States. I also want to know about USA culture and traditions.
My family includes five members counting me; my mother, my father, and my two brothers, I am the oldest one. I am an outgoing person, I have an adventurous soul, and I really appreciate places surrounded by nature. I enjoy listening to music, singing, watching movies, and reading. I am creative, and I stand out a lot for handicrafts.
I am more than excited about my future experiences in Minnesota, because I know that it will help me as a future teacher since it has been my dream since I was a child. I want to make my beautiful country known, and I want to connect with my students. Additionally, I will improve my English and share special moments with you.
