February 8, 2024
Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:
We hope that you are having a good week! There are a lot of engaging things happening around school! Our first graders enjoyed their time at the Science Museum of Minnesota on Tuesday. This evening, we have our PTO sponsored Math Night at school. We are looking forward to connecting with families at our National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID) event on Monday morning (see below for more information regarding both events).
During National School Counseling Week, please join us in thanking Anne Moore, PSI School Counselor, and Nihan Zhou, Counseling Intern, for their efforts daily to provide proactive lessons and additional support to our students.
Thanks for sharing your children with us. Have a great week, keep reading, and see you soon.
Sincerely,
Corey Maslowski, Principal
Kelsey Clark, Elementary Support Supervisor

Meet the PSI Staff
In this section, we will be featuring some of our amazing PSI Staff so the community can get to know every adult in the building better, as we all work together to support all students at PSI!
This week we want to introduce you to three PSI Staff members. Michele Oliver is the lead cook, Kara Scheid is a culturally relevant literacy coach and Corey Maslowski is the principal. We are so happy to have them! Please help us welcome them to the PSI Community.

The PSI Drama Club presents "El príncipe rana" (The Frog Prince)
“He wants to be a frog again?”
It may be hard to believe, but it’s true. After the Frog Prince is kissed by the beautiful princess, he discovers that life in the castle isn’t exactly the “happily ever after” he was expecting. This year's Drama Club students will share their twist on this classic fairytale during the following two evening performances at the SLP Middle School Auditorium:
- Friday, February 23, at 6:30 p.m. (the Monday rehearsal group)
- Saturday, February 24, at 6:30 p.m. (the Thursday rehearsal group)
All PSI students will see the performances on Wednesday, February 21.
Performances will be in Spanish and are open to the public at no charge.

From the PSI Health Office
As we head into cold and flu season, we’ve noticed an increase in illnesses commonly seen in the school setting including colds, covid/flu, strep throat, stomach flu, and pink eye. To help prevent the spread of these illnesses, wash hands frequently, do not touch eyes, nose or mouth, cover mouth and nose with elbow when sneezing or coughing, disinfect commonly touched surfaces and stay home for the following reasons:
- Fever of 100 degrees or more. The student should stay home for 24 hours after their temperature returns to normal without the use of fever reducing medication.
- Vomiting or diarrhea. The student is to stay home until 24 hours after the last episode.
- Any uncontrolled cough.
- Rashes with unknown causes. Check with your family physician/clinic before your student returns to school.
- Feeling ill/unwell and the student is unable to fully participate in school activities
- Please let the attendance line know the reason for your absence.
Free COVID tests can be ordered at the links below:

K-5 A-E Specialist Calendar
In our SLP elementary schools, our specialist classes rotate on an A, B, C, D, E day schedule. We do this so that students do not consistently miss classes on a particular calendar week day. Please see the February rotation schedule.

Be SMART: A message about proper gun storage and safety
St. Louis Park Public Schools is teaming up with Be SMART to share an important message about proper gun storage and safety.
Last year, more than 350 children in the U.S. gained access to a firearm and unintentionally shot themselves or someone else. In 2021, 22 Minnesotans under the age of 18 were killed by guns, and more than 1,700 guns were stolen across our state that year. When guns are not properly stored, tragedy can strike.
We ask that you consider following the Be SMART message in your home. It emphasizes the importance of secure gun storage. Consider secure gun storage as an important step you can take to help protect your family, school and community.
Here’s what Be SMART stands for:
Secure all guns in your homes and vehicles.
Model responsible behavior around guns.
Ask about unsecured guns in other homes.
Recognize the role of guns in suicide.
Tell your peers to Be SMART.
Research shows that secure storage plays a vital role in reducing the risk of gun violence. Preventing children from accessing unsecured firearms is required by Minnesota law.
In addition to following the Be SMART message, you can take action by:
-
Learning more at besmartforkids.org
-
Watching and sharing the Be SMART educational video
-
Sharing Be SMART resources and materials
Thank you for reading this important safety message and for being a partner with us in helping to keep our kids, schools and communities safe.
