From School Leadership

March 21, 2024

Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:

Thank you to the many community members who shared about their careers yesterday during our annual Career-A-Palooza yesterday. Our students were engaged in fantastic presentations. Thanks to Anne Moore, our school counselor for organizing this event. Please see here for some photos.

It was fun to see our first grade students share projects at the first grade Talent Development Night on Monday. Their architectural structures were built using math, art, and science skills! All of their work was inspired by Norma Merrick Sklarek, the first Black female architect in both New York and California. Thanks to Sr. Hernández for offering this opportunity for our students!

We are excited to meet next year's kindergarten students and families tonight at our "Kindergarten Welcome Night." Optional tours will start at 5:30 p.m., and the presentation will start at 6:00 p.m. in our cafeteria.

Take care, keep reading, and have a great week!

Sincerely,

Corey Maslowski, Principal

Kelsey Clark, Elementary Support Supervisor

Meet the PSI Staff

Meet the PSI Staff

In this section, we will be featuring some of our amazing PSI Staff so the community can get to know every adult in the building better, as we all work together to support all students at PSI!

This week we want to introduce you to three PSI Staff members. Ingrid Brown is a first grade teacher, Anne Moore is our elementary school counselor, and Iveth Velázquez is a kindergarten classroom assistant. We are so happy to have them!

PSI News

Cartonera Project

We are gearing up for our annual Cartonera Writing Project (May 31). In preparation for this event where every student shares a published book, we will need help sewing. It really only requires a sewing machine and the capacity to sew a straight(ish) line. If you are willing and able to assist in this way, please let Kara Scheid know (scheid.kara@slpschools.org).

Elders' Wisdom Children's Song Celebration on May 6

The fourth graders are busy preparing for our Elders’ Wisdom, Children’s Song community celebration. This project incorporates community, history, education, and celebration through storytelling, song, and spoken word. Each fourth-grade class interviewed an elder from the community and is now writing a song inspired by the elder’s life story. Mark your calendar to join us on Monday, May 6, at 6:30 p.m. at the SLP Middle School for this exciting event! Contact Sra. Wieber with questions (wieber.kimberly@slpschools.org).

K-5 A-E Specialist Calendar

In our SLP elementary schools, our specialist classes rotate on an A, B, C, D, E day schedule. We do this so that students do not consistently miss classes on a particular calendar week day. Please see the March rotation schedule.

Application to Host Now Open!  Amity Intern - Fall of 2024

Each year PSI welcomes eight Amity Interns from Spanish speaking countries who assist our teachers in the K-5 classrooms. Amity interns live with PSI host families one semester allowing both an opportunity for greater language learning and cultural exchange. Please consider hosting an Amity Intern for a semester! We need fall host families for our wonderful incoming interns next year. This is a unique and wonderful experience that can benefit your entire family. Plus, it's a great way to give back to the students, staff and entire community. Want more info? Please check out the FAQs or email us at psiamity@gmail.com.
