October 26, 2023
Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Families:
It is always so much fun to see our students engaged in reading. This week, we have seen much joy as students perused the PTO-sponsored book fair as a part of our Leer-a-tón. The Leer-a-tón is the biggest fundraiser for our PTO, and the funds directly support our Amity intern program. This year, we are again lucky to host eight amazing interns who work and live in our community for the year. As a reminder, you are invited to join in this evening for the reading events at school; see below for more information under "PTO news".
It was also great to connect with so many families at Connect Times last week. Thank you for sharing your perspectives and for working with us to help your children have a great year. Please give us feedback about the experience here.
Thank you for sharing your children with us, keep reading, and have a great week!
Sincerely,
Corey Maslowski, Principal
Kelsey Clark, Elementary Support Supervisor

Drama Club Registration is open!
The Drama Club is open to students in grades 3-5, and includes weekly rehearsals on Mondays or Thursdays. There will be three February performances. Students will experience the magic of theater while working together to learn lines, create costumes and props, and perform for friends and family.
Students are expected to consistently attend rehearsals. Please look over the schedule on the Drama Club website (http://psidramaclub.weebly.com/index.html) to be sure that your child can attend all rehearsals and performances before committing to this activity.
Students in GOTR, YEP, or other Community Education classes can join Drama Club, even if they need to miss the first week due to overlapping classes. For other conflicts related to classes or clubs, please contact Sra. Wieber (wieber.kimberly@slpschools.org).
Follow this link to register. Drama Club registration closes on Wednesday, November 15.

Halloween Guidance for Families
As the month of October comes to an end, we know many families have questions about seasonal festivities including Halloween. Our primary goal is to ensure that our educational environment remains focused on learning, so this year, we would like to provide some guidelines regarding the acknowledgement of this holiday within our school.
-
We will not wear costumes or face paint: Costumes, face paints, and related accessories can be distracting in a learning environment. Therefore, we ask that students not wear or bring these things to school.
-
We will not bring or share candy: To ensure the safety and health of all students, there will be no sharing or distribution of candy in school. We encourage families to partake in their own Halloween traditions at home, if they choose.
-
We will not have parties: We do not have parties at school on Halloween. As you know, we have three school party days to build community during the school year (this year we had the fall party on October 13, the day before winter break, and the day before spring break).
However, while we are setting these guidelines to maintain a conducive learning environment, we also understand the cultural and festive importance of Halloween. Our dedicated teachers may discuss Halloween and other holidays around this time and their historical and cultural significance during their morning meetings. This will be an opportunity for students to learn about and appreciate the diverse ways people celebrate.
Thank you for being an integral part of our school district community, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

K-5 A-E Specialist Calendar
In our SLP elementary schools, our specialist classes rotate on an A, B, C, D, E day schedule. We do this so that students do not consistently miss classes on a particular calendar week day. Please see the October rotation schedule.

As we journey through this academic year, we'd like to remind everyone of the core principles that guide our endeavors at St. Louis Park Public Schools.
St. Louis Park Public Schools sees, inspires, and empowers each learner to live their brilliance in an environment that centers student voice and experience to create racially equitable learning that energizes and enhances the spirit of our community.
We believe in:
-
The brilliance of ourselves and others. Everyone has the capacity and responsibility to foster the growth and brilliance of others.
-
Authentic community engagement. Engaging and supporting our employees, families, and communities will enhance the healthy development of each learner.
-
High expectations. Instilling and upholding high expectations empowers students and staff to higher levels of achievement.
-
Collective responsibility. Embodying the collective and urgent responsibility of anti-racist practices enriches a work and learning environment and community.
-
Persistent effort. Through persistent effort we will create anti-racist schools and academically successful learners.
-
Racial consciousness and cultural competence. Racial consciousness and cultural competence are essential to each person’s ability to be a catalyst for change.
-
Advocacy for equity. Everyone has equal intrinsic worth and we will advocate for the historically marginalized.

Mayor for a Day Essay Contests
The League of Minnesota Cities is once again encouraging our state’s 4th, 5th, and 6th graders to share ideas about how they would make cities better through submitting essays in the League’s “Mayor for a Day” essay contest. Contest information can be found at lmc.org/mayorforaday.
Three winning students will be chosen from among submitted entries. Each winning student will receive $100 and will have their essay published in a future issue of Minnesota Cities magazine. If a student from your city wins, we are happy to share ideas on public recognition you can consider in your own community.

Leer-a-tón Ends Tomorrow
This year’s Leer-a-tón is almost over! This Friday is the end of PSI’s largest fundraiser of the year, which means that there’s still plenty of time to cozy up with a good book or listen to a story and record more minutes reading! All donations collected will go to the PSI PTO and help fund our Amity Intern Program. Be sure to keep filling out the flier that was sent home in student backpacks. Thursday, the PSI Amities will be at school from 5:30-7:30pm to read stories to families. There will also be Cozy Reading Time open in the PSI gym, and both events count towards minutes read for this fundraiser! Check out the flier in English or Spanish.

Spring Amity Host Families Needed
Our children benefit each day from the assistance of eight Amity interns from Spanish speaking countries in our PSI classrooms! Each semester, our school depends on 8 families willing and able to host these dedicated interns. We are in need of a few more PSI host families for spring semester (mid-January to mid-June). We are hoping to get these families signed up in the next few weeks and we thank every family for considering how they can support this program, whether it is fundraising during Leer-a-tón or hosting an intern this spring.
Not only is hosting an amity a huge service to the PSI community, but it is a really wonderful and unique experience that can benefit your whole family. One of the most exciting things we hear is the joy of hearing your child speaking Spanish in their day to day lives with the amity in your home.
Want more info? Please check out the FAQs or email us at psiamity@gmail.com.
Ready to sign up? Email us at psiamity@gmail.com or fill out this application and we’ll reach out to you!

Amity Introductions - Meet Josué
My name is Josué Avileo Ramirez Martinez. I am from El Salvador and it will be a pleasure to stay at your school and in your country. I hope to learn a lot about you.
Before I was selected as a candidate of the amity program, I was studying for my Bachelor's degree in English at the University UNIVO, and working in my free time. I have a great family which is composed of my parents, 3 sisters, a nephew and a niece.
My favorite activities are: to play soccer, to study, to work as a hairdresser and my hobbies are: to draw, to paint, to ride my motorcycle, to watch anime, to practice extreme sports. Other important things about me are that I like to learn new things, I like to share with other people, and I am friendly, respectful and responsible.
