February 2, 2023

Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community,

I hope that you are having a great week! Happy Second Semester and happy February to you and your families. February is Black History Month. This month, and every month, we honor the history and many contributions of our Black community members. I am so proud to be a St. Louis Park Public School employee. In my role, daily I have the opportunity to watch our staff members create opportunities for students to see themselves in the curriculum and to learn about the experiences and cultures of others. Thank you for sharing your brilliant children with us.

We will have several opportunities this month in honor of Black History Month, and we are excited to celebrate National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID) on Monday, February 13. Families of African American students are invited to join their children for donuts, coffee, and juice sponsored by the PSI PTO starting at 7:15 in our school theater. We will spend some time in community, and students will go to class by 8:00. Parents will be invited to engage in community and conversation around our school and then spend time in their child's class as your schedules permit. Please watch for more detailed information next week.

Take care, and have a great week!

Corey

P.S. As a reminder, tomorrow is a Professional Development Day, and we will not have classes. Progress reports will be sent home in backpacks this afternoon. We look forward to connecting more about your child at Connect Times in two weeks!

Interest Form for the Policy 506

Student Behavior Intervention Procedures Development Team

Background: On Aug. 10, 2021, the St. Louis Park Public Schools School Board unanimously approved and updated Policy 506 Student Behavior Intervention (formerly Student Discipline) to align with the mission and vision of the 2020-25 Strategic Plan for Racial Equity Transformation, reduce exclusionary practices that are highly punitive and racially predictable, include the use of non-exclusionary behavior interventions such as Restorative Practices, and center the humanity of students. A team will convene to develop procedure recommendations.

Purpose: Create procedure recommendations that embody the restorative commitments of Policy 506 and the mission/vision of St. Louis Park Public Schools.

Scope: Research, best practices (Restorative Practices and trauma-informed practices as two examples), and input from stakeholders will inform the work. Team members are expected to understand the current policy, and encourage the engagement, input, and feedback of all stakeholders. Team members will develop a recommendation that supports our district mission to see, inspire, and empower each learner to live their brilliance in an environment that centers student voice and experience to create racially equitable learning that energizes and enhances the spirit of our community.

If you are interested in participating in the development of the procedures for Policy 506 Student Behavior Intervention, please complete the form below by Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023. Contact Flower Krutina, krutina.flower@slpschools.org, with any questions.

Meals during February Connect Times

The February teacher-parent Connect Times are around the corner. Providing meals for our amazing staff at PSI is a great way to show them how much we appreciate all they do for our kids. Connect Times are scheduled for Thursday, February 16, and Friday, February 17.

We are doing a hybrid cater/pot-luck style. Thursday will be a Taco/Burrito Bar and Friday, a brunch with bagel sandwiches and salads. Both will be buffet-style so that staff can pop in to serve themselves during a break in conferences.

Please consider signing up below to either supplement a meal, volunteer your time, or contribute money towards a catering order. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY! The staff is always so grateful to parents for this special treat!
