April 11, 2024
Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:
It has been great to have our students back from spring break! There were so many smiling (and some tired) faces on Monday!
Our fifth grade students will take the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA's) in science tomorrow, Friday, April 12 from 8:15-10:00. Our students in grades 3-5 will take the (MCA's) for reading next Wednesday and Thursday. The following week, our students in grades 3-5 will take the MCA in math on Wednesday and Thursday. These state assessments measure student achievement (and growth in math and reading--for fourth and fifth graders) related to the Minnesota State Standards. Again this year, all students take the tests at the same time (approximately 8:15-10:00) on Chromebooks. These, and many other formal and informal assessments, help inform us of our students' learning.
At 1:45 today, we will participate in the Severe Weather Drill during MN Severe Weather Awareness Week. With all of our routines (and drills), we talk with students about the importance of knowing what is expected to be able to create a safe and caring learning environment so each student can learn.
Thank you for being members of our community. Take care, and see you soon!
Corey Maslowski, Principal
Kelsey Clark, Elementary Support Supervisor

All Kids Bike Program
Our kindergarten students got a big surprise this afternoon! Thanks to a generous donation from HDR, we received 24 bikes through the "All Kids Bike Program." See here for more information. Working with Sr. Watkins and Sra. Huss, our students will have the opportunity to learn and practice bike riding skills and bike safety in physical education class! It was a fun afternoon; ask your child about it! We are grateful for the support and generosity!

Cartonera Project
We are gearing up for our annual Cartonera Writing Project (May 31). In preparation for this event where every student shares a published book, we will need help sewing. It really only requires a sewing machine and the capacity to sew a straight(ish) line. If you are willing and able to assist in this way, please let Kara Scheid know (scheid.kara@slpschools.org).

Elders' Wisdom, Children's Song Celebration on May 6
The fourth graders are busy preparing for our Elders’ Wisdom, Children’s Song community celebration. This project incorporates community, history, education, and celebration through storytelling, song, and spoken word. Each fourth-grade class interviewed an elder from the community and is now writing a song inspired by the elder’s life story. Mark your calendar to join us on Monday, May 6, at 6:30 p.m. at the SLP Middle School for this exciting event! Contact Sra. Wieber with questions (wieber.kimberly@slpschools.org).

K-5 A-E Specialist Calendar
In our SLP elementary schools, our specialist classes rotate on an A, B, C, D, E day schedule. We do this so that students do not consistently miss classes on a particular calendar week day. Please see the April rotation schedule.
