From the Principal

November 3, 2022

Dear PSI Community:

I hope that you have had a great week! Last week was a lot of fun with the book fair and the Leer-a-tón activities! Thanks to our many volunteers for helping these events be a great success. Thanks, also, for encouraging our children to read books of interest, and for the support of our Amity intern program!

I'm looking forward to participating in the PTO-sponsored "Family Fun and Fitness Night" at the High School Football Stadium TONIGHT from 6:30-7:30 pm; please join us!

Please help me in congratulating our music teacher, Sr. David Davis! He is one of 25 music teachers nationwide to be recognized as a semifinalist for the 2023 GRAMMY Music Educator Awards. Please see here for more information, and congratulations, Sr. Davis!

As a reminder, we do not have classes tomorrow due to a professional development day. Our teachers will be engaged in work related to our Continuous Improvement Plan and Culturally Relevant Literacy. We look forward to seeing our students on Monday!

Have a great week, and keep reading!

Share the Mic Podcast: Youth Data Analysts - The Hopes and Dreams of our Community

Episode 1 dropped October 31, 2022. Listen to Episode 1 on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Amira Abdirahman and Charlotte Cox spent their summer as Youth Data Analysts. These incredible students join Supt. Astein Osei for the first episode of the Share the Mic podcast to share more about their experience. Their research on the hopes and dreams of their community has ignited change in St. Louis Park Public Schools.

The Share the Mic podcast explores what connects the St. Louis Park community: who we are as individuals and who we are as a collective to understand the Ubuntu saying, I Am Because We Are. Through conversations with students, staff, and community members, we'll talk about what brings us joy, our hopes and dreams, and our connection to St. Louis Park Public School's Strategic Plan for Racial Equity Transformation. November is Native American Heritage Month

St. Louis Park Public Schools exist on the land of the Dakota and Ojibwe peoples. We acknowledge the Dakota and Ojibwe community, their elders both past and present, as well as future generations. We acknowledge that our school district was founded upon exclusions and erasures of many Indigenous Peoples, including those on whose land our school district is located. We commit to dismantling the ongoing legacies of colonial power and the district’s desire to support the ongoing work of local Indigenous communities to thrive in our schools. Especially this month, we celebrate Native American Heritage Month and honor the Indigenous students and families we serve in St. Louis Park Public Schools.

Reminder: COVID-19 Guidance

St. Louis Park Public Schools will continue to follow guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) regarding COVID-19 during the 2022-23 school year. View the MDH Guidelines/Flowsheet and the CDC Isolation guidelines

  • Masks: Students and staff will be required to wear a face covering if 5% or more of the students and/or staff who attend or work at their school site test positive for COVID-19. Students and staff can choose to wear a mask at any time.

  • What If I Test Positive? Stay home for at least five days, isolate yourself from others and wear a well-fitted mask if you must be around others in your home. Isolation may end after five days, and students and staff may return to school on day six if your illness symptoms have improved, you are fever-free without fever reducing medicine for 24 hours, and are able to wear a well fitted mask on days 6-10. If a person was asymptomatic and then developed symptoms after testing positive, the 5-day isolation period starts over, with the start of symptoms being day zero.

  • Guidance if Exposed: Students and staff who have been exposed to COVID-19 do not need to quarantine.

  • COVID-19 Dashboard: We publish COVID-19 infection rate data on a weekly basis – with the exception of Winter Break and Spring Break. The information will be published weekly on our website.

Visit the COVID-19 Information webpage for more information.

Spring Amity Intern Host Families Needed!

The PTO still needs 2 families to host an Amity intern for spring semester (mid-Jan thru mid-June)! Hosting is a unique experience that can benefit your entire family, plus it’s a great way to give back to the students, teachers, and staff of PSI and beyond. If you are interested in learning more, check out a list of commonly asked questions in the Host Family FAQs 2022-23

Please email psiamity@gmail.com if you are interested in hosting, have questions or would like to connect with one of our PSI Amity Coordinators, Kyle Wermerskirchen, Megan Patterson, Paige Young or Susan Croom.

Lunchroom Volunteer Opportunities are Back!

We would love to have you come help our students in the cafeteria this year.  Tasks will include things such as, helping to open tricky food packages, handing out extra napkins or utensils, and wiping down tables. A maximum of two volunteers are requested for each time slot; there are two time slots per day, 11-noon and noon-1pm.  Feel free to sign up for one or both hours. Volunteers need to be parents or legal guardians. This is a fun way to get into the school and help out!

Book Fair Update

The Scholastic Book Fair was a HUGE success! PSI PTO earned more than $2,500 in books for the school and $2,250 for the Amity Intern Program. There were also over 200 books purchased by families for PSI classrooms! Thank you to all the volunteers who made this event possible, including team leads Maria Twedten, Jana Christian, and Teresa Angier.

Welcome Amity Intern, Joaquín Vilas!

A special thank you to Kelly & Andrew Marinello for hosting Joaquín this semester! And thank you to the following cousin families: Katie & Adam Juul, Hannah & Michael Anderson, and Beth & Scott Rich. Joaquín is assisting 1st grade classrooms this fall.

My name is Joaquín and I was born in A Coruña, a city located in the northwest of Spain in 2000. I'm a sporty person, I like to practice different kinds of sports like skiing, tennis, football… but my favorite is fencing, which I have played since I was 8. My family is made up of my mother, who works in a bank, my father who works in the famous brand Pfizer and my two siblings, one older sister who is living in Germany and my little brother who is 13 years old.

Since we were really young, our parents introduced us to the joy of traveling and living experiences abroad. This is not my first experience living abroad, I spent one year living in Ireland when I was 16 and a few months in Denmark last year. That is the reason why I am taking advantage of this opportunity of learning from a new country, this time as a teacher. This is my first experience as a teacher after finishing my teaching degree this year, that is the reason why I feel really motivated to apply all the things that I have learned across these years.

I´m looking forward to starting this new experience in PSI, meeting new teachers, students and friends. Moreover, I feel excited about sharing costumes and the culture from my home country at the same time I learn about life in the USA and fight the cold winter in Minnesota.
