From School Leadership

October 12, 2023

Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:

We know that, like for us, the events occurring in the Middle East are on the hearts and minds of our community members. As we live out our Strategic Plan and Mission, we are committed to creating a safe and caring place for our students. As always, please communicate with your child’s teacher, with our school counselor, Anne Moore, our social worker, Dana Baumeister, or to either of us. Please see the section below that was sent to families from our District Office yesterday.

Tomorrow is a classroom fiesta day. Acknowledging the needs of the whole child, we want students to celebrate relationships through meaningful and inclusive social experiences. We believe parties foster and build community. We look forward to welcoming many families to our school. Please help us to be good neighbors and follow local rules and not block driveways, mailboxes, etc. Check in at the main office at door 1 upon arrival. If your end of the day dismissal will be different than normal, please notify your child’s teacher and Kids Place, if applicable.

As a reminder, we do not have classes next Wednesday due to Family Connect Times, and next Thursday and Friday due to MEA. We look forward to seeing you, and we will be excited to see our students again on Monday, October 23.

Take care, and thanks for being members of our community.

Sincerely,

Corey Maslowski, Principal

Kelsey Clark, Elementary Support Supervisor

PSI Drama Club

The PSI Drama Club will begin soon! Students in grades 3-5 are invited to participate on Monday or Thursdays after school. More information and the registration link will be in the Thursday, Oct. 26 edition of La Prensa. Sra. Wieber will give students more information during Talent Development class.

Outdoor Learning Spaces at PSI

We hope that your children have shared with you about the new playground and outdoor learning spaces!  We are also lucky to have a wooded area, on city property, adjacent to our school that we use for student learning with an outdoor classroom there.  We have great spaces for our students to learn inside and outside!

K-5 A-E Specialist Calendar

In our SLP elementary schools, our specialist classes rotate on an A, B, C, D, E day schedule. We do this so that students do not consistently miss classes on a particular calendar week day. Please see the October rotation schedule.

School District News

Dear SLP families,

Over many years but especially in the last few days, our world witnessed distressing events unfolding in the Middle East. The repercussions of these events resonate globally and within our community. These events deeply affect our students, staff, and families.

We wish to remind everyone that while world events may be beyond our control, our response in honor of the humanity and dignity within our own community and schools are not. Our topmost priority is to ensure a safe, respectful, and nurturing environment for all our students and staff.

In light of these recent events, our educators and staff are prepared to provide support to students. Students are encouraged to meet with school social workers, psychologists and guidance counselors as needed. Additionally, site leaders will be available to hold space for students together in community. These resources will play a pivotal role in navigating discussions and concerns that might arise.

We are also including resources for parents. It is recommended to discuss the impact of social media during this time. Please talk with your student regularly on what they are seeing and consider reducing social media exposure. Please see additional resources below.

Resources for Families

How to Talk to Kids About Violence, Crime, and War: Common Sense Media gathers tips and conversation starters to help you talk to kids of different ages about the toughest topics.

National Child Traumatic Stress Network: Provides resources that can be filtered by topic or keyword and by audience with a focus on how adults can identify traumatic responses in young people and how to support them.

Recognizing the diverse backgrounds and lived experiences within our community, we understand that the effects of these events will vary. In the coming days, some might need additional support. We encourage you to utilize school and community resources for mental health support. In challenging times, our commitment to each other and understanding are our greatest strengths. We are here for you.

We invite your family to walk & dance in the Homecoming Parade on Friday

We invite students from Aquila, Peter Hobart, Susan Lindgren and Park Spanish Immersion to be in the St. Louis Park Homecoming Parade and dance Waving Flag with Super María on Friday. Look for Super María holding a big WAVING FLAG sign. Look for it before and after the parade. Families are welcome to walk in the parade as well, and we ask that you stay close to your children during the event.

The parade is on Friday, October 13th, from 4:30- 5:00 pm, with lineup beginning in the back parking lot (long lot) of the high school at 4 pm. If your student would like to be in the parade, please meet at 4 pm at the High School (6425 W 33rd St, St Louis Park, MN 55426).

PTO News

Leer-a-ton Starts TOMORROW!

It’s that time of the year again… Leer-a-ton! This is PSI PTO’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and a fun way to celebrate the joy of reading. This year we are hoping to raise a record $25,000 which will help support all of the PTO events and our wonderful Amity Intern Program. Check your child's backpack today for the Leer-a-ton flyer to track the minutes your student reads, is read to, or listens to audiobooks. Then ask family, friends and neighbors to sponsor their reading with a donation to the PTO. Prizes will be given to top readers in each grade and classes with the most minutes read. Be sure to join us for Amity Storytime and Cozy Reading on Thursday, October 26th, from 5:30-7:30 pm. Bring your own books or grab a few at the book fair, which will be open that night! Check out the flier in English here or in Spanish here.

PSI Book Fair

It is almost time for the Scholastic Book Fair! Come shop for books in Spanish and English. The book fair will be open Wednesday, October 25th from 2:30-8 pm and Thursday, October 26th from 2:30-8 pm. To alleviate parking issues, please plan to arrive for the book fair AFTER dismissal when buses have departed the parking lot.

We need several volunteers to help with set up, student previews, working the registers during shopping hours, and tear down. If you are able to help out, please sign up here. If you have questions about a specific volunteer opportunity please contact janachristian10@gmail.com

Online shopping will be available Oct 23-Nov 5th (shop here). If you would like assistance with purchasing a book for your student, please reach out to our school social worker, Dana Baumeister, at baumeister.dana@slpschools.org.

La Bodega Taco Tuesdays!

Taco Tuesdays just got better!  La Bodega, which is owned by PSI families, has generously offered to donate a portion of their sales, every Tuesday, to the PSI PTO. Save the cooking for a different night and order from La Bodega on Tuesdays!

Amity Introductions - Meet Mariana

My name is Mariana Ospinal. I’m 22 years old and I’m from Lima, Perú. Before coming to Minnesota I was working in an American school in my hometown as a substitute teacher. I have just graduated with a bachelor’s degree and I have my teaching license in Early Childhood Education. In Lima, I lived with my mom and two of my siblings. We usually hang out in our house, go to the cinema or take mini road trips around our town. I also have a younger brother that I love spending time with.

Some of my favorite hobbies are reading, baking, listening to music, watching movies, and doing all kinds of crafts. I’m really looking forward to starting this new adventure in Minnesota, getting to know all the teachers and students of PSI, and getting to know more about education in the US.

Application to Host Now Open!  Amity Interns - Spring of 2023

Each year PSI welcomes eight Amity Interns from Spanish speaking countries who assist our teachers in the K-5 classrooms. You will be hearing more from your grade level Amity Intern, in the coming days. These interns are either pursuing or have recently completed a college degree with an education focus, and are between the ages of 20-30 years old.  Amity interns live with PSI host families one semester allowing both an opportunity for greater language learning and cultural exchange.  Please consider hosting an Amity Intern for a semester! We still need several spring host families for our wonderful interns. This is a unique and wonderful experience that can benefit your entire family. Plus, it's a great way to give back to the students, staff and entire community. Want more info? Please check out the FAQs or email us at psiamity@gmail.com.

Ready to sign up? Email us at psiamity@gmail.com or fill out this application and we’ll reach out to you!
