From School Leadership

November 16, 2023

Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:

We hope that you have had a good week!

This morning, we were honored to welcome Michael "Laughing Fox" Charette, Native American storyteller, poet, and member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, back to our school. Laughing Fox engaged our fourth and fifth grade students in story and music as he shared parts of his culture with us. We are grateful for this amazing experience! See here for a photo.

Next Monday, we are hosting a virtual informational session on Monday, November 20 from 6:00-6:30 p.m. at this link. Come learn more about our PSI Amity Intern Program and volunteer opportunities. We are looking for a few host families for the spring and starting to work on host families for next school year. This amazing experience of having interns from Spanish speaking countries work with our teachers in our classrooms would not be possible without the generosity of our families.

Yesterday, we joined schools across the country in acknowledging Elementary Support Professionals Day during American Education Week. We are grateful for the efforts of each of our staff members who work so very hard to see, inspire, and empower our 525 learners. Today, we also thank you on National Parent Involvement Day for partnering with us in the education of your children; we thank you for being members of our community.

Please see below to learn more about some amazing opportunities coming up! Thank you for sharing your children with us, and thank you for being members of our community.

Sincerely,

Corey Maslowski, Principal

Kelsey Clark, Elementary Support Supervisor

Meet the PSI Staff

Meet the PSI Staff

In this section, we will be featuring some of our amazing PSI Staff so the community can get to know every adult in the building better as we all work together to support all students at PSI!

This week we want to introduce you to two teachers that are new to PSI this year. Emily Kirk is a 5th grade teacher and Carlos Barberán is a 2nd grade teacher. We are so happy to have them! Please help us welcome them to the PSI Community.

K-5 A-E Specialist Calendar

In our SLP elementary schools, our specialist classes rotate on an A, B, C, D, E day schedule. We do this so that students do not consistently miss classes on a particular calendar week day. Please see the November rotation schedule.

November is Native American Heritage Month

St. Louis Park Public Schools exist on the land of the Dakota and Ojibwe peoples. We acknowledge the Dakota and Ojibwe community, their elders both past and present, as well as future generations. We acknowledge that our school district was founded upon exclusions and erasures of many Indigenous Peoples, including those on whose land our school district is located. We commit to dismantling the ongoing legacies of colonial power and the district’s desire to support the ongoing work of local Indigenous communities to thrive in our schools. Especially this month, we celebrate Native American Heritage Month and honor the Indigenous students and families we serve in St. Louis Park Public Schools.

Give To The Max Day is Today!

The PSI PTO is participating in Give to the Max Day 2023, Minnesota's state-wide giving holiday!

Give to the Max raises millions each year for Minnesota nonprofits and schools and offers organizations like the PTO the chance to win additional grants from a prize pool of more than $100,000. Every donation of $5 or more, throughout today, enters the PSI PTO in these drawings.

Last year during Give to the Max the PTO raised $1,500 from 30 donors. This year, we have a goal to raise $2,000. You can give to PSI PTO online by visiting the PSI PTO GiveMN page. Thank you for any support you can give!

Mental Health Fair and Movie Night

Hope Speaks

On Tuesday, December 12th the PSI PTO is partnering with the HOPE Speaks Project to hold a community dialogue rooted in the school district’s strategic plan for racial equity transformation. As parents and caregivers, you play a vital role in making the mission and vision of our school a reality. We are inviting all of our PSI families to show up for honest, open, personal, and engaged conversations on race and its impact on our educational experiences.

We’ll meet in the PSI Media Room from 6-7:30pm, and child care will be available. You can RSVP for the event here, which will help us plan for child care, but this event is open to anyone who is willing to attend, an RSVP is not strictly necessary.

Amity Introductions - Meet Alexandra

My name is Alexandra Pozo. I am 22 years old, and I am from San Salvador, El Salvador. I am a 5th applied linguistics student at Instituto Centro Cultural Salvadoreño Americano.

My past experiences include volunteering as a kindergarten assistant. I have also had the opportunity to teach English to 4 to 17-year-old kids, and some adults too. My hobbies are listening to music, watching movies and series, and sports, but my favorite is basketball since I played when I was 14 years old.

My family includes my mom Emilia Montano, and my younger sister Elizabeth Pozo. The three of us live in Soyapango, El Salvador. My dad Rodolfo Pozo lives in Santa Ana with his wife and my sister and I come to visit them.

I am so excited to be an amity and very much looking forward to learning and getting so much experience in this new culture and its different ways of teaching here at PSI.
