From the Principal

April 20, 2023

Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:

Our students in grades 3-5 took the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA's) for reading yesterday and today. Next week, our students in grades 3-5 will take the MCA in math on Wednesday and Thursday. Our fifth grade students will take the MCA in science on Monday, May 1 from 8:15-10:00 am. These state assessments measure student achievement (and growth in math and reading--for fourth and fifth graders) related to the Minnesota State Standards. Again this year, all students take the tests at the same time (approximately 8:15-10:00 am) on Chromebooks. These (and many other assessments) help inform us of our students' learning.

At 1:45 pm today, we will participate in the Severe Weather Drill during MN Severe Weather Awareness Week. With all of our routines (and drills), we talk with students about the importance of knowing what is expected to be able to create a safe and caring learning environment so each student can learn.

Our PTO-sponsored Pizza and Movie night was a great success! We had over 200 community members join us for the showing of Zootopia. After the movie, we had some brilliant student responses to the following questions.

  •  In Zootopia, there were a lot of different kinds of animals. In what ways was it easy for the animals to get along? When was it hard?
  • Judy and Nick grew to be good friends throughout the movie. How were they good friends to each other? How did their expectations about each other change?
  • What can we learn from Zootopia?

PSI movie night photos are here

Have a great week, keep reading, and thanks for sharing your children with us!

Sincerely,

Corey

Elders' Wisdom, Children's Song Celebration

The fourth graders are busy preparing for our Elders’ Wisdom, Children’s Song community celebration. This project incorporates community, history, education, and celebration through storytelling, song, and spoken word. Each fourth-grade class interviewed an elder from the community and has written a song inspired by the elder’s life story. Families are invited to join us as the fourth graders honor these elders in a community celebration on Monday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the SLP Middle School. Contact Sra. Wieber with questions.

Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 16 - 22

April 16-22, 2023 is National Volunteer Appreciation Week. As volunteers are recognized across our nation, we’d like to thank our own community of volunteers.

Over 100 people, both community members and parents, are volunteering in our schools this year. Thanks to each and every one of you for being a source of support for our students and staff. Our district acknowledges you for the important role you play helping children feel seen and heard so their brilliance can shine. All of us in the school community are grateful for your commitment to our students.
