Community Release

// Pilot 'Arrivals' section of the Toronto Star celebrates new Canadians. 100 meter long photo created for PAN AM DAY allows councillors to see through the eyes of a new citizen. For best viewing conditions come to city hall at dusk on July 10th.//

'Fresh Eyes' consists of transparent photos that have been applied to the windows of city councillors' offices that face onto Nathan Phillips Square, allowing our city officials to see through the eyes of a new Canadian. The title 'Fresh Eyes' also references the innovation and value that new and diverse perspectives bring to debate and decision making situations. For best viewing, please visit at dusk on July 10th when councillor's lights will be on.

The companion work to 'Fresh Eyes' is 'Births, Deaths, Arrivals' in the Obits section of the Toronto Star. This work showcases not only the need for newcomers within Canada's shifting demographics but also seeks to balance out the spectacle of 'Fresh Eyes' with individual stories and intimate portraiture. The portraits were created by Che Kothari ( Manifesto ) and stories written by Ravi Jain ( Why Not Theatre ) Helena Shimeles (founder Young Diplomats ) Tendisai Cromwell ( Sway Magazine ) and edited by Nayani Thiyagarajah ( Shadeism ). The Arrivals section will start on July 10th, in the Greater Toronto Notices section of the Toronto Star and run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays during the month of July.

Arrivals.ca ( http://www.arrivals.ca ) is the online hub for artists working on the project and the exploration of the overall question of how we can better welcome newcomers. At the website you can follow the project, view photos as well as view a series of stunning video portraits by Tiffany Hsuing ( Golden Nugget Productions ). The first of which features new Canadian Olga Florean.  New videos will be rolled out every 3 days.
