Today's Learners Shape the Future

I still read a newspaper in hard copy once a week, because I like to keep intriguing articles where I can re-encounter them after I've spent time pondering them. As an academic coach who encourages processing time and spaced practice, I try to model what I promote. A few weeks ago, I came upon a one-page article in the New York Times that featured college students from all over the U.S., at all types of schools, pursuing a variety of degrees. Initially, this article put me into problem-solving mode, thinking about how educators can help students navigate challenges such as financial straits, difficulty in connecting with others, and anxiety about job prospects.

However, when the page caught my eye again today, I felt something new:

A deep gratitude for these students, and for today's college student population. They quite literally are the future of the country. They are working to be ready to fill jobs in a rapidly shifting career landscape, and to be able to resource their families and communities. I am grateful that they still believe in learning, and are investing time and effort and money in it. I am thinking about how I might share this gratitude with my own students. I ask myself, how might a sense of their value as part of a bigger picture help students persist when immediate challenges seem overwhelming?

In the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday, the LifeBound team wishes to share our gratitude for coaches and for all who use coaching in their work.
