SCSJ CROWD Fellows provide updates on local redistricting

Local redistricting is under way in Alabama and many cities and towns, as well as county commissions, are immersed in the process while others have not even started their process yet. Similar to the federal and state redistricting process, there has been a lack of transparency and limited accessibility to information needed for community members to have the information required to be actively engaged in the local redistricting process.

Briefing focuses on redistricting and its effects on communities of color in the South

Four of the South’s redistricting experts took part in a media briefing hosted by Ethnic Media Services on Friday, Dec 3.

The briefing “Redistricting Maps Target Communities of Color - Southern States Spotlight Trend” featured Alabama Forward Executive Director Evan Milligan, Brennan Center’s Democracy Program’s Senior Counsel Michael Li, NC Counts Coalition Director of Civic Engagement Kyle Brazile, and El Pueblo Executive Director Iliana Santillan.

The briefing highlighted the trends across the country in regards to redistricting. So far, 20 states have completed congressional redistricting and 22 states have completed the legislative redistricting cycle. Alabama is one of those states who has completed both. Unfortunately, Alabama has a history of unfair mapping practices and redistricting process.

“When we draw maps in this country, we wind up litigating them,” said Michael Li during the briefing. He also noted that maps need to be litigated quickly for the 2022 election. He said there really isn’t time to win challenges ahead for the 2022 elections.

Alabama Values to start production of documentary on redistricting

Alabama Values is set to begin production in January 2022 on a mini-documentary that will unpack the 2021 redistricting process and the issues created in several Alabama communities due to the packing and crack of minority communities.

The People’s Voice: Redistricting Through A Community’s Lens mini-documentary will amplify the voices of underrepresented communities impacted by Alabama’s history of unfair mapping practices and highlight the state coalitions working to fight for fair mapping and fair districting. This project is made possible by funding from SOLVE (Southern Leadership for Voter Engagement)
