May is Mental Health Month, and we're about to get crazy! Pun intended. But seriously, who doesn't want to turn up the dial on their approach to mental health? Whether you yourself struggle or you have a loved one who is greatly impacted, everyone has a reason to lean in to what's happening next month.
One group offering support and resources is the EASD Resiliency Coalition. Senta Holmes and her team have planned weekly and monthly initiatives to bring people together, share resources and reduce the stigma of the battles we face within. Let's be real, the words 'mental illness' have a polarizing effect. As stated in a recent Brain Spa article, "In the past, mental health was a subject shrouded in stigma and misconceptions, often leading to detrimental consequences for individuals suffering from psychological disorders. Society’s understanding of mental health was limited, with many viewing it as a personal weakness or character flaw rather than a legitimate medical condition."
Rather than isolating ourselves or others, it's time to unite because the reality is that 1 in 4 people will go to battle with themselves at some point in their lifetime. And I say 'some point' because not all mental health issues are hereditary or ongoing. Unforeseen events and changes in work or home life can alter our sense of security forcing a shift within. Everyone should be educating themselves with tools and resources regarding self care so when your life hits a speed bump, you know how to move forward with caution. We need to actively assess ourselves so we understand when it's time to raise our own hand and say, "Help me, please".
Here are ways to help promote May as Mental Health Month:
• Get yourself a green light bulb! Highlight May at your home or at your place of business by lighting it up green in Elkhorn.
Save 10% when you purchase at Jackson's Do It Best!
• Take a walk. Wellness walks will be every Wednesday from 11:30am - 12:30pm around Veteran's Park.
• Find a furry friend. Enjoy a little animal therapy on May 13th at Matheson Memorial Library from 11:30am - 1pm.
• Decorate. The Hope Squad is decorating 10 business windows downtown which will be judged by community leaders. Not on the list? You can also decorate and help highlight what May is all about.
• Wear Green. Whether taking a walk on Wednesdays or staying indoors, wear as much green in May as your closet will allow!
I'm human. You're human. That means each of us stand to gain from connecting with one another. Lets unite around the topic of mental health and the plethora of resources and activities being provided during the month of May. Together, we've got this!
