Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Pastoral Reflection

With change often comes uncertainty. It has been a month since I arrived, and already small but meaningful changes have taken place in our worship at Mass. The Eucharistic celebration is the very heart of our faith, the place where heaven and earth meet. Every detail of how we celebrate is meant to draw us into the mystery of God’s presence and help us return to Him in humility. That is why we have made certain adjustments, such as removing the hand sanitizers from the altar. This decision was made prayerfully, with the hope that our focus might remain entirely on the Lord. The sanctuary — the altar space — is the holiest place in the church, and we should always treat it with reverence, allowing nothing to distract us from what is taking place there: the sacrifice of Christ made present for us.

Today’s readings invite us to deepen our trust in that presence. In the Gospel, the apostles cry out, “Increase our faith!” Jesus responds by speaking about the power of faith, comparing it to a mustard seed — the tiniest of seeds, yet full of life and potential. This image reminds us that faith does not need to be perfect or immense to be effective. Even a little faith, placed entirely in God, can move mountains and transform our lives.

Faith is not merely a feeling; it is a gift, and a gift that calls us to action. When we trust God, He leads us to unexpected places, carries us through difficult seasons, and surprises us with His grace. St. Paul’s exhortation to Timothy — to “stir into flame the gift of God” — is a call for us to live our faith boldly and courageously, even when the world tempts us toward fear or discouragement.

Finally, Jesus teaches that faith expresses itself in service. True disciples do not serve for recognition or reward but out of love for God. The deeper our faith, the more naturally we will serve others with joy, patience, and generosity.

This week, let us pray with the apostles: “Lord, increase our faith!” May we trust Him more completely, allow Him to guide our steps, and let our faith shine through daily acts of love and service.

Procession in Honor of the World Day of Migrants and Refugees

Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish invites you to celebrate the Jubilee of Migrants and Refugees by accompanying us in procession and prayer to celebrate the Jubilee of Hope. The procession will begin at Our Lady of Guadalupe, 1770 Kearney, at 2pm and will end at the Holy Door of Hope at St. Joseph Cathedral (1535 Third Ave). There will be a special prayer in the Cathedral at 3:30pm. We recommend using public transportation to arrive at Our Lady of Guadalupe, as parking is limited.

For decades, Our Lady of Guadalupe has stood alongside immigrants in San Diego, offering shelter and support to individuals newly released from detention centers or experiencing street releases. Today, through the FAITH project of interfaith court accompaniment, the parish continues this legacy by walking with immigrants and their families during some of the most challenging moments of their journeys. We commit ourselves to walking with our brothers and sisters, knowing that God walks alongside us.

First Corinthians: The Church and the Christian Community

The conflicts of the early Christians in Corinth are in many ways similar to our struggles today as Christians. They, too, witnessed division, scandal, immorality, persecution and other trials. In First Corinthians: The Church and the Christian Community learn how St. Paul addressed these struggles by introducing the Corinthians to God’s greatest gift–the Eucharist.

Ruah Adonai Breath of God Bible Study will begin First Corinthians: The Church and the Christian Community on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 8:30 am in the Parish Center. Participants will meet every Thursday to view an engaging video presentation followed by a time of lively group discussion and fellowship. Background on the Gospel Reading

In today's Gospel we hear Jesus teach about faith and service to God. The context is a continuing dialogue between Jesus and his followers about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. Jesus has just finished an instruction on sin and forgiveness. There are two related teachings that Jesus offers to his disciples when they cry out for an increase in faith.

The first is the familiar reminder that faith, even just a little, will enable the followers of Jesus to do wondrous things. But this uplifting and inspiring teaching is quickly followed by the second teaching, a caution about knowing one's place in God's plans. The disciples of Jesus are to understand themselves as servants to God and his plans. Even when God works wonders through us, with our mustard seed-size faith, we must not seek praise. Our participation in God's plans is God's grace to us—nothing more, nothing less.

When we are graced enough to cooperate with God, the work we do is nothing more than our obligation to God as faithful stewards. And yet, our faith enables us to believe that what we have offered in service to God, as his servants, can be made to produce a hundredfold.

XXVII Domingo ordinario
