Valentine Day Hugs (Or Not?)
We all love to hug our pets, especially cute little furry ones. Humans see hugging as an expression of affection, both towards each other and towards our pets. Did you know, however, that some dogs and cats do not understand this concept at first, the behavior is something they learn from us. A newly adopted dog might not understand and be frightened by a hug. We often pick up our pets to hug them when they are concentrated on doing something else like looking away, licking, yawning or trying to get away. A dog may bite when caught off-guard or uncomfortable. Therefore, be careful this valentine season in showing your pets extra love and affection - especially newly adopted dogs.

Valentine's Day Treats - Not for Dogs!
Chocolate is toxic to dogs! Depending on the type and amount of chocolate consumed and the weight of the dog, chocolate could cause a medical emergency. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine. These chemicals can speed up a dog's heart rate and stimulate their nervous system. The following types of chocolate are the most dangerous to dogs in order of toxicity:
- Coco powder
- Unsweetened baker's chocolate
- Semi-sweet chocolate
- Dark chocolate
- Milk chocolate
Signs of chocolate poisoning usually appear within 6-12 hours after consumption. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, increased urination, tremors, seizures, collapse and death. If you believe your dog has eaten any chocolate call your vet immediately or call the Pet Poison Hotline for advice: 855-213-6680.

January was tough!
The weather was cold and we took in 10 dogs, all needing special care. It is just unbelievable how some people treat their dogs! Well, we got them all cleaned up and want to introduce 4 of them to you:
Sunny, Sally, Sandy & Tyler:
These 4 dogs are all Shih Tzu's and cute as can be. Two of the dogs are still puppies, about 10 months old. These four adorable pups are cleaned up and ready for adoption.
-
Sunny & Sally: Sunny is Sally's mom and they are a loving bonded pair. They are both small Shih Tzu girls. Sunny is mostly white, about 4 years old and 13 pounds. Sally is mostly black, about 10 months old and 9 pounds. Both girls are super friendly, cuddly and playful. They need to be adopted together;
-
Sandy: He is an all around terrific boy who will become your best buddy. He is a Shih Tzu about 5 years old and 20 pounds. He is an easy going boy with a wonderful demeanor and a delight to be with;
-
Tyler: he is a young male Shih Tzu pup about 10 months old and 14 pounds. He is totally adorable in both personality and looks. He is a real sweetie and a delight to be with.

We've Got Puppies!
These two sweet little pups were part of the 10 dogs that we brought in last month. Meet Max & Teddy, two little brothers born September 10th. The darker little guy is Teddy, he is much smaller than his brother Max. The owner of this bonded pair was diagnosed with breast cancer and is not doing well. She decided to surrender the pups, she wanted the best and a new opportunity for these little guys. Baby Teddy has an eye ulcer in one eye so the pair are not ready for adoption yet. We will keep you informed of their progress.

- Does your dog need advice about human behavior that only a trained dog advisor can answer? Ask Amber!.
Amber is one of the editor's dogs who, of course, is a Shih Tzu Rescue Alumni:
I show my love for my family, especially mom, by following her from room to room, always wanting to be with her. Mom thinks I am insecure. How can I make mom understand my behavior?
~~Love To Be Close
Your behavior is a completely normal way for dogs to show love. Dogs show love for their humans in various ways including: eye contact, physical contact, following them around, excitement when their human returns home, tail wagging, licking & protection. Humans want to hug us to show their love. Hopefully once your mom reads this response she will understand that you love her so much!
~~With pearls of wisdom & a perfectly fluffed tail, Amber
Send us your fun dog questions for Amber and we will feature them here!

Roselle - The 9/11 Guide Dog Hero
On September 11, 2001 a Labrador Retriever named Roselle was guiding her blind owner, Michael Hingson, inside the north tower of the World Trade Center when tragedy struck. Amidst the chaos, Roselle remained calm, leading Michael and others down 78 flights of stairs to safety. She never hesitated, even as the building shook and debris fell all around them. Her bravery and composure saved lives, proving that service dogs are not just companions but true heros.
