Featuring Connecticut's Amazing Land Trusts
Greetings!
As many of you may know, last week marked the end of the legislative session. Despite the urgent need for action, including prioritizing nature-based solutions, two key climate bills did not move forward in the Senate. This was highly disappointing.
Yet, despite these policy setbacks, successes in the field and the incredible conservation work in our state give me reason for hope as land trusts, towns, volunteers, and so many others continue to come together to protect land in their communities.
This month's #LoveYourCTLandTrust eNews includes inspiring stories about land trusts' dedication to advocacy, fundraising, stewardship, and other actions to enhance conservation in Connecticut. From film festivals to land acquisitions to volunteer events, grassroots volunteers continue to work hard to promote conservation for their communities, wildlife, future generations, and the land itself.

There is still much to be done to advance environmental policy in Connecticut, but this month’s stories remind us that there are also on-the-ground successes worth celebrating.
Sincerely,
Victoria Jaskaran

The event showcased award-winning films about conservation, wildlife, climate change, and many other timely environmental topics. Through their collaboration, the land trusts were able to share these important films with their communities, increase awareness of key environmental issues, and raise funds to protect open space in the region…

Local Stewardship for the Turtle Creek Preserve
“The Essex Land Trust’s relationship with The Nature Conservancy dates to 1985, when it gifted 97 acres of the Canfield-Meadow Woods Preserve to us. We are thrilled that it is now donating Turtle Creek Preserve to us, and we look forward to providing local stewardship to this iconic Connecticut River property.”

Upgrading and Expanding the Glemboski-Ous Trails
Avalonia Land Conservancy (ALC) purchased the Glemboski-Ous Preserve, a 160-acre property in Bozrah and Montville, in late March of this year. The purchase was funded by $300,000 from the DEEP Open Space and Watershed Land Acquisition Grant Program (OSWA), $100,000 from the Town of Bozrah, and $20,000 from CLCC’s TAG Program. ALC is now preparing to improve this new preserve for the public. Stewards will work to clear and mark the trails, build bridges, and maintain the land. Parking lots and driveways will be improved for future visitors to use. Once opened, the new and renovated trails will provide hikers and birders with opportunities for recreation…

Spring Stewardship Sundays for All Ages
“Our Spring and Fall Stewardship Sundays are a great opportunity to gather with friends and family, get into the fantastic outdoors and make a difference to our conserved properties. Wilton has such beautiful properties and it’s really rewarding to take on the role of caretakers as a community!”
– Marlen Clark, Wilton Land Trust Stewardship Committee Chair
Wilton Land Trust (WLT) has begun its Spring Stewardship Sundays. From now until June 9, and led by WLT’s youth interns, this recurring volunteer opportunity allows community members to care for WLT’s conserved properties, learn environmental management skills, and connect with others who care about conservation in the community and beyond...
