Greetings!

I hope this note finds you well. The past few years have been challenging for many of the families we serve. There are families dealing with mental health issues involving domestic violence, addictions, and extreme stress. I was extremely saddened by the recent incident in Edmonton’s Inglewood community. My heart goes out to the two young fallen police officer’s families and the suspected youth’s family members. Such incidents are primarily related to mental health struggles and the lack of adequate and timely medical support.

At MĂ©tis Housing, we are not experts in mental health, but we have the means to direct vulnerable families in the right direction so they may receive prompt support. If you or your family feel the need to share your struggles and are seeking assistance, please do not hesitate to contact one of our Housing Resource Workers or call our head office. Our Reaching Home Program offers mental health and addiction support. Through this program, we also provide emergency housing for any reason, including families fleeing from domestic violence.

As weather conditions improve, we will once again hold tenant engagement events in communities we serve across Alberta. Event information will be available on our website, and via your Tenant Relations Officer who will contact you personally. We look forward to connecting and sharing a bite with tenants during these events.

ï»ż

At MĂ©tis Housing, we always look to further the quality of life of the families we serve. In addition to improving the condition of MĂ©tis Housing properties, we will continue offering housing-related supports and services to strengthen our Nation.

My best wishes to all of you!

Bindu Bonneau

We hope your Easter is filled with family, love, renewal, and some childhood wonder.

Indigenous Housing Revitalization Pï»żroject

Our goal is to rebuild affordable homes and create healthy inclusive neighbourhoods. We are focused on making our goal a reality.

ï»ż

In partnership with the Government of Alberta, and City of Edmonton, a new accessible and affordable housing development will be built at 11240 - 96 Street NW to help mitigate a critical housing shortage in Edmonton.

We are proposing a one-bedroom home, a barrier-free one-bedroom home, and two two-bedroom affordable homes on this property to accommodate the housing needs of four Indigenous families. These homes will be equipped with geothermal heating, cooling technology.

Our new energy efficient, highly adaptable, and accessible homes will integrate seamlessly with the neighbourhood. These new green-build homes will revitalize the neighbourhood and respect the mature community’s sentiments.

Necessity of Wrap-Around Services

MĂ©tis Housing took part in the MĂ©tis National Council’s forum on Housing and Homelessness in Ottawa February 28 – March 1. Over the two days, we participated in small group discussions on the following topics:

  1. What are the housing goals and objectives of the MĂ©tis Nation?
  2. What are the barriers to funding and governance of the Urban, Rural, and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy?ï»ż
  3. What special considerations do we look at when providing housing? What housing needs do we have? What vulnerable sub-populations are falling through the cracks? Do we have regional needs, and what are they? What concerns do we have regarding the application process to obtain funding?

It was a wonderful opportunity to come together with other MĂ©tis housing organizations from across the country with a shared commitment to best serve our Citizens and community.

There were presentations by the MĂ©tis Nation of Ontario, MĂ©tis Nation – Saskatchewan, and the MĂ©tis Nation British Columbia. Aaron Barner, MĂ©tis Nation of Alberta's Senior Executive Officer, also presented on the evolving role of Indigenous housing providers, the need for wrap around services as an integral part of Indigenous housing, and how we are incorporating it.

Respect Towards Staff

No Smoking

Annual Inspections

Bullying and disrespect towards our staff are NEVER acceptable. Our staff are here because they care. They do not create policies. They can not change the policies. What they can do is support you in your successful housing journey.

We take all bullying, hate speech, threats, and disrespect seriously and will follow up accordingly.

If you have a question or concern, please politely email your Tenant Relations Officer and they will respond at their soonest convenience.

SMOKING IS PROHIBITED inside all our residences, including private units.

Due to the irritation and known health risks of second-hand smoke, increased risk of fire, and maintenance, cleaning, and redecorating costs, all forms of smoking are prohibited.

We take great pride in our units and want to ensure we can continue providing all residents with the highest quality of accommodation possible for years to come.

We take our responsibility to provide quality housing for our residents very seriously. One way we do this is by ensuring our properties stay in great condition through annual inspections and interior home visits.

INTERIOR HOME VISITS will start in April

ANNUAL MAINTENANCE INSPECTIONS will start in May
