Hi Chicago,

I’m excited to host “From the Seats of Power: Exploring Latine History Through Chicago’s City Council,” a conversation highlighting Latine history through the lens of Chicago’s local government. The event will feature moments from the newly digitized Chicago City Council Audio Archive, a collection of recordings spanning the 1970s to the 2010s.

Dario Durham of 77 Flavors of Chicago will moderate a conversation between me, Congressman Jesus "Chuy" Garcia and 26th Ward Alderperson Jessie Fuentes. During this conversation, you’ll hear archival recordings that bring Chicago’s history to life and gain a deeper understanding of Latine history, representation and the issues that have affected Latine communities throughout our city’s history.

Please join us at Latinos Progresando, 2724 W. Cermak Rd., Chicago, IL 60608, on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Doors open at 11:00 a.m. Space is limited, and admission will only be allowed with an RSVP.

We encourage you to explore the Chicago City Council Audio Archive. These recordings offer a valuable resource for historians, researchers and students, as well as anyone interested in learning more about the discussions and decisions that have influenced life in our city.

The preservation of these records was made possible through a 2024 grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) that was awarded to the Office of the City Clerk for the project. For any questions about our collections, please contact us at our City Clerk Archives email: city_clerk_archives@cityofchicago.org.

We look forward to seeing you!

If you’re unable to attend, we’ll be livestreaming the event. Thank you for your continued support for the Office of the City Clerk. Please help us spread the word and forward our newsletter to other Chicagoans! Also, follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter for all our latest updates and announcements.

Sincerely,

ABC7 Features Casa Central and Annual Gala

This morning, ABC7 featured an interview with Marty Castro, highlighting Casa Central’s more than 70 years of service and impact across the Chicago region. The segment shines a light on how Casa Central continues to provide children, families, and older adults with the critical programs, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive.

The interview also featured Casa Central’s upcoming Annual Gala Illuminate – A Masquerade Gala on October 30. We are grateful for ABC7’s longstanding partnership and generous sponsorship of this year’s Annual Gala.

The methodology for this data is pretty basic, with YouGov simply surveying Americans about whether they have a positive, negative, or neutral view of various beers from the different brands presented. According to the polling, Corona has a 60% popularity rating across all demographics, followed closely by Guinness (56%) and Budweiser (54%). Breaking things down by age, Millennials and Gen X agree with the overall judgment and put Corona on top, but Boomers have a preference for Guinness. There are slight differences when separating the answers by gender as well, with women preferring Corona and men showing a slender preference for Guinness.

Corona Extra is a Mexican lager that has been produced now for over 100 years. First brewed to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Cerveceria Modelo in 1925, this pale lager took the U.S. (and the rest of the world) by storm over the following century.

Interestingly, despite the long history of Corona in its home country, the rise of La Cerveza Mas Fina in the U.S. has only happened in the last few decades.

Mexactivistas is a nonprofit organization that meets weekly at local restaurants to network, hear guest speakers, review books, and support local businesses and residents in Chicago. More information: donreggie@aol.com/773.991.5916

Next meeting: Friday, October 30, 2026, at 5 Estrellas Restaurant (59th & Richmond-Gage Park Barrio).
