Education Policy is Top Priority for Both House and Senate Chamber for Week 1 of the 2026 Regular Legislative Session
On Wednesday, January 7, 2026, the Senate Chamber passed Senate Bill 2002 by a vote of 33 to 19. This measure addresses student transfers.
It removes the requirement for the current district of attendance to approve the release of students.
This measure will now head to the House Chamber for consideration.
On Wednesday, January 7, 2026, the Mississippi House of Representatives Education Committee hosted a hearing on school choice. Currently, the House’s proposed legislative measure to address this issue is House Bill 2, “Mississippi Educational Freedom Program Act of 2026.”
Note, no action has been taken yet.
This act currently resides in the House Education Committee.
Additional Note: MAS will continue to monitor both the Senate and the House school choice/student transfer measures to identify what type of impact any of these measures could have on ad valorem taxes as these legislative measures are debated throughout the legislative process.
