BEWARE OF SCAMS
Last week, we learned of scammers who were able to mimic a pastor's email and sent information out through a church directory, trying to get people to purchase gift cards. Please let your congregations know that churches are under attack by scammers. Here is what people should be aware of:
1) Someone posing as the pastor or church administrator. The email address will be close but not correct. They will ask for your help because the pastor is in a meeting and needs to purchase gift cards for someone. This is a scam. They collect the gift card information and use it for their own benefit. Call the church to see if this is a real need.
2) Someone posing as a parishioner seeking a copy of the church directory. Please call the individual to see if it is really them. A scammer will use that information to mimic people’s emails and to send out requests for money or to plant a virus on your computer
3) Someone sending you an electronic invitation to a celebration or party that you were not told about ahead of time. If the invitation is vague and doesn’t include specifics, call or email the person whose name is on it to see if they are actually holding a celebration or party. If you click the invite, it will download a Trojan Horse onto your computer that may extract information or damage it.
4) Someone calling you and saying they are from the church and that your electronic deposit didn’t go through. They want your bank information. Call the church to verify that this actually happened. Once someone has your bank information, they can steal all your money.
It doesn't take much for anyone to be taken advantage of. If you are tired or overwhelmed with work or life, they will take advantage of you. Never respond to an email that sounds strange or seems out of place; always verify with the church or the individual who sent you that email.

DISCOVER ICTHUS: MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN VENEZUELA AND MEXICO
Tuesday, October 6 at 5:00-6:00 PM, Church Lounge, 1750 Virginia Road,
San Marino, CA
San Marino Community Church Mission Partner ICTHUS helps churches throughout Latin America share the good news of Jesus and create lasting change in the lives of at-risk children and youth. Come for light refreshments and meet Luis Yon, the CEO/International Director, Honduran leader Pamela, and special guest, Rev. Andres Barrantes. Pastor Barrantes will share his experience growing up as an ICTHUS member in Costa Rica.
This fall ICTHUS is assisting churches in Venezuela that are still recovering
from devastating earthquakes. They’ve successfully initiated ICTHUS groups in temporary shelter camps and the streets of La Guaira, where the earthquake caused significant damage to numerous buildings. In Mexico, seven new churches are receiving training to start ICTHUS for their children. These churches are partnered with the large ministry Compassion and are now using ICTHUS’ curriculum as their spiritual formation program.
For more information contact SMCC@smcommunitychurch.com or call (626) 282-4185. No RSVP needed.
