2019 Annual Membership Meeting News

KANSAS HORSE COUNCIL ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING HELD AT STANLEY STOUT CENTER IN MANHATTAN

Our annual membership meeting was rescheduled to February 2, in Manhattan, KS.  The Stanley Stout Center, a KSU Dept. of Animal Sciences building and location of the KSU Rodeo Club, was a fabulous facility to host our meeting!
As always, Kansas State University is a great friend to Kansas Horse Council.
The annual meeting was well attended and the food was very enjoyable- Thanks Cowboy Chicken!  Guests enjoyed presentations from our guest speakers:  Dr. Andy Hawkins, KDA-Division of Animal Health, State Commissioner, regarding the Global Link equine passport update and Dr. Marty Vanier, National Bio Agri-Defense Facility (NBAF) construction update and facility education, and Dr. Chris Blevins from KSU Vet. Med.  Thank you to our guest speakers and their informative presentations.

In the News:
  • We've heard from some breed & discipline groups about changes to the program schedule at Kansas State Fair that impact their show schedules. We are committed to open dialogue with these groups and the KSF to seek a solution that benefits all parties in support of equine programming promotion and advancement in KS!
  • HB228 (the racing initiative) was moved to Judicial Review where it likely will remain unworked.

EQUINE INFLUENZA OUTBREAK UPDATE                                      PRESS RELEASE
EQUINE INFLUENZA
Laurie Beard, DVM, MS, DACVIM

There has been a recent local outbreak of equine influenza in a few horses in the Manhattan area. Influenza is a very contagious upper airway virus, that results in high fevers (105-106) and cough. The typical duration of disease is 3-7 days. The biggest complication is development of bacterial pneumonia.
Vaccination with influenza is recommended every 6 months. This vaccine is a risk-based vaccine (and recommended for horses that are exposed to other horses).   This outbreak is occurring in horses that have been vaccinated for influenza greater than 6 months ago. If your horse has been vaccinated for influenza in the last 6 months, your horse likely has some immunity.   However, if your horse has not been vaccinated within 6 months, it would be ideal to have your horse vaccinated soon. We are unaware of any large scale outbreaks. Influenza is easily disinfected and does not live long out of the body. However, as we all know we all own horses to ride and compete, and thus spread of infectious disease is always a possibility.
If there is concern about development of infectious disease, we do recommend taking rectal temperatures on horses twice a day. Horses with a fever (> 101.5F) should be isolated immediately, and your veterinarian notified. Vaccination can be done in the face of an outbreak (and best done with the modified live intranasal), and may limit spread of the disease.

There has been a recent local outbreak of equine influenza in a few horses in the Manhattan, KS and the Kansas City, area.  Please contact your local Veterinarian regarding information, concerns and treatment.  Thank you.
