Anxiety and the Coronavirus PART 2 Pregnancy during a Pandemic
Megan Van Vleet wrote this piece. She is 8+ months pregnant with her first child (our first grand child). We wanted all of you to have it as it has some great information for Pregnant women during this time. Please pass it along to any Pregnant women you know:
Being pregnant during a pandemic was not part of my plan. Nor was giving birth during the potential apex of it. But here we are
11♀1
I'm 36 weeks and swinging daily between complete elation when I feel our son swirl around to utter terror with all the uncertainty. I honestly have to give the biggest credit to Charlie for being my rock and helping me laugh thru my tears. Because this is a lot.
I work in close contact with and on people. When the shit hit the fan (on my bloody birthday, no less!) I made the decision to transition to mat leave and am spending most of my days isolated, except for a walk around the block with my husband and dogs or my OB appointments, which are now weekly.
I've had a lot of people reach out and ask how all this is impacting my birth plans. Truthfully, it hasn't at this point. Everything has stayed the same. My plan has always been to give birth in a hospital with my husband by my side. What has heartbreakingly changed is our ability to have our parents immediately present once our son (both their first grandchild) is earthside. This has especially been a tough pill to swallow as my parents are in Toronto, Canada; it'll likely be a while before they can cross the border and come to LA.
As of right now I'm flying on the wings of preparedness over panic and faith over fear. It's not a perfect equation. Sometimes the latter gets the best of me but I'm doing my best to have confidence in our decisions to get thru this with joy and sanity.
We're all in this together! I've outlined some of the things I've been doing to feel more assured and informed. I'm by no means an expert or telling anyone what they should do in this position. However I respect how flying blind is inundating. Hopefully my steps shine some perspective or direction for whoever else out there is traversing this mayhem while expecting. And remember, STAY TF HOME!
1
CONTACT WITH YOUR OB, NURSE, MIDWIFE, DOULA OR OTHER BIRTH SUPPORT -
lean on whatever professional you can that makes you comfortable at this time. I'm very fortunate to have a solid relationship with my OB. We have very frank and candid conversations about everything that's going on. I lean on her for perspective and advice, and fully respect all of her recommendations she's had during my pregnancy, especially now. We have a plan that we're sticking to. However I've also made it very clear that I'm open to doing whatever I need to ensure the health and safety of my son and I. Together we're keeping cautiously optimistic, confident and in constant communication until he's in my arms and we're home together.
1
HOSPITAL/BIRTHING CENTER/HOME BIRTH PROTOCOLS - everything, everywhere is in constant flux. I'm planning on giving birth in a hospital. I've called them directly to chat with the Labor & Delivery ward about what's changed. I also made sure I'm registered. Our location currently allows one support person only to enter in with the patient. So that means if you were planning on having your partner, midwife/doula and parent with you, you have to choose one. Also, once we're in we can't leave until we're discharged. We have to bring everything we need with us, including all food & drink. We were also advised to not enter thru emergency and use the front/alternative entrance. We will also keep the baby in-room with us once he'sborn.
NOTE: If you're giving birth at a birthing center or at home I'd still ring your local hospital that you'd go to, if needed, just in case!
1
BREASTFEEDING/LACTATION SUPPORT - from my understanding this is being suspended at most hospitals, including mine, to limit the persons going in and out of the room. If you're planning on breastfeeding try finding a virtual 101 class to take. We recently did one with The Pump Station & Nurtury in West LA. It was originally in-person then switched to online when social distancing was enforced. The info was still top notch, we learned a ton. Also check if they offer virtual lactation consultations and support groups. They may also have other classes and groups virtually, as well.
1
HOSPITAL BAG - make it a suitcase and pack extra.
Mamas: toiletries, robe, comfy clothes, towels, wash cloths, pillow, linens, charging cords, postpartum pads & underwear, nipple cream, perinium spray bottle, Bluetooth speaker for music, and your birth plan with your pediatrician's contact deets.
Partners: toiletries, multiple sets of comfy clothes, towels, wash cloths, pillow & linens (for chair, cot or banquette), charging cords, snacks and drinks, and disinfecting wipes.
Baby: baby's going home outfit, car seat, bottles & formula (unless you're breastfeeding). Most hospitals will provide diapers and wipes while you're there. Maybe check.
I'm erring on the side of more than less since we can't leave and amenities will be limited with the outbreak.
Good luck to anyone out there that's read this and preparing to welcome a wee one. Despite the circumstance, this is still a wonderful moment in our lives. I wish you all nothing but health, wellness
and
love
❤

Also If you would like us to add a workshop
in the schedule for your area let us know.
It would have to be scheduled by March 2021.
For example, if our Latin American Graduates would like us to do a workshop in

that. It can be a workshop we schedule that is
open to women from ALL companies in Latin
America.

Great Contribution
A few weeks ago I met with Karon Wright the founder of; Great Contribution
Great Contribution is a wonderful and successful 501c3 in the US that funds microloans to women in Uganda to start businesses. My college roommate Rosemary Llwantale Musoke was from Uganda so I know first hand what the women of Uganda are going through.
They also train the women in business practices so they will be successful. That is often the missing piece in other programs. Which is why we are supporting this program.
The loans are small by our standards. They are only $30 to $300 dollars! But each loan turns these women's lives around. They can send their children to school and feed and clothe them & keep them Healthy.
John and I are supporting Karon's organization. They have received the 2019 Gold Seal of Transparency from Guide Star.
If you are interested in supporting these women contact them directly at: Click here for more information Even if you can only donate a small amount it will help a woman in Uganda start her business! Susan
