Hōʻike 2019: The Battle of Kuamoʻo

Hōʻike 2019 will take place on March 14 and 15 in Koaiʻa Gymnasium. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the show starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are available for $5, with a special $20 early entry package which includes pre-show pupus from 4 to 5 p.m. Show and ticket information will be available  at  www.ksbe.edu/kshhoike on Feb. 20.

As always, Hōʻike showcases a significant moment in Hawaiian history. "The Battle of Kuamoʻo" revolves around Liholiho's decision not to reinstate the 'ai kapu and Kekuaokalani's objection and eventual war against Liholiho. There is also an added layer of complexity through an internal conflict for Manono, Kekuaokalani's wife. Manono deals with the guilt of being part of the rifle company that cuts down the O'ahu forces at the battle of Nu'uanu and the conflict with her values that arises. In the end she recognizes the importance of standing for what she believes in and not assimilating into western culture even if this means death, her eventual destiny.

The opera is presented in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language).

Funds raised from the Hōʻike performances will help to defray travel costs for the students traveling to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August to once again represent Hawaiian culture and moʻolelo on a worldwide stage.

Authentic Relating Games at  La'akea
March 17th 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm

What is this!? What are Authentic Relating Games?

Authenticity is acting and speaking in alignment with our inner feelings, desires, and needs-our truth. Authentic Relating (AR) is the practice of bringing our truth into connection with others', so that we can weave a more rich human experience.

Authentic Relating Games are an easy and fun way to introduce AR into daily life. They can help us experience deeper connections, boost empathy, see the world through others' eyes, and understand ourselves better so that we can enjoy life more. The games are fun, highly interactive partner and group exercises that demonstrate and explore AR, and getting to know yourself better while at the same time learning to see and appreciate more about everyone you connect with. These games are NOT board games like 'Chutes & Ladders' or 'Checkers' (they're better ).

Authentic also means that there is no cookie-cutter mold for how you "should" be or what relating "should look like". Everyone is a complete universe unto themselves, has a unique style, personality, and integrity that is perfectly them, and everyone is perfect and amazing as they are (including in their belief that they aren't.)

Join us for a FUN night of connection! Be the Authentic YOU!
Please plan to arrive early to park and walk to community room.
Doors will close promptly at 5:30.
Suggested donation $15.
To get to La' Akea community, take Highway 130. Go one mile past Leilani and turn right on Alaili. Follow Alaili and make a right at the driveway at the La' Akea sign. Park in the first parking area and walk up to the main house. Bring a flashlight for the walk up the driveway

Aloha! See you on March 17th!
Your hosts,
Lynn, Shine, Patrick and Kana

Cat Video Fest debuts in Hawaii! 70 minutes of the best cat videos of the year, plus some classics and surprises.
10% of Box Office sales from this year's program will be donated to  Rainbow Friends Animal Sanctuary to help Big Island cats in need.
Cat Video Fest is a charitable nonprofit dedicated to bringing the joy of cat videos to the masses and raising money for cats in need. Each year, curator Will Braden creates a program of the best cat videos of the year, along with some classics and unique submissions.
Each year, Cat Video Fest curates a compilation reel of the latest, best cat videos culled from countless hours of unique submissions and sourced animations, music videos, and, of course, classic internet powerhouses. Screening events take place all over the world in a host of venues and raise money for cats in need, often through partnerships with local cat charities, animal welfare organizations, and shelters to identify how best to serve cats in the area. The all-new edition will begin touring in February of 2019 and  Oscilloscope plans to bring Cat Video Fest to hundreds of theaters around the globe where patrons can enjoy the shared experience of communal joy that these videos bring out. What better way for us humans to come together than by watching cats?

Documentary
Directed by Jimmy Chin, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi
Starring Alex Honnold, Dierdre Wolownick, Tommy Caldwell, Jimmy Chin
Academy Award Winner for BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
Follow Alex Honnold as he becomes the first person to ever free solo climb Yosemite's 3,000 ft high El Capitan wall. With no ropes or safety gear, he completed arguably the greatest feat in rock climbing history.
Alex Honnold peers over the edge of Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park. He had just climbed 2000 feet up from the valley floor. (National Geographic/Jimmy Chin)
From award-winning documentary filmmaker E. Chai Vasarhelyi and world-renowned photographer and mountaineer Jimmy Chin, the directors of "MERU," comes FREE SOLO, a stunning, intimate and unflinching portrait of free soloist climber Alex Honnold, as he prepares to achieve his lifelong dream: climbing the face of the world's most famous rock ... the 3,200-foot El Capitan in Yosemite National Park ... without a rope. Celebrated as one of the greatest athletic feats of any kind, Honnold's climb set the ultimate standard: perfection or death. Succeeding in this challenge places his story in the annals of human achievement.
FREE SOLO is an edge-of-your seat thriller and an inspiring portrait of an athlete who challenges both his body and his beliefs on a quest to triumph over the impossible, revealing the personal toll of excellence. As the climber begins his training, the armor of invincibility he's built up over decades unexpectedly breaks apart when Honnold begins to fall in love, threatening his focus and giving way to injury and setbacks. Vasarhelyi and Chin succeed in beautifully capturing deeply human moments with Honnold as well as the death-defying climb with exquisite artistry and masterful, vertigo-inducing camerawork. The result is a triumph of the human spirit that represents what The New York Times calls "a miraculous opportunity for the rest of us to experience the human sublime."
