Editor's Note: This NutraIngredients-USA article highlights industry innovation, including AHPA's Good Agricultural and Collection Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices for botanical materials (GACP/GMP) and an ongoing effort headed by the University of Guelph in Ontario to build out a set of best practices and references around the use of DNA technology in botanical ingredient identification. In addition to helping suppliers comply with what retailers and manufacturers are looking for, the GACP/GMP guidance and assessment tools also help the industry navigate the new world created by FSMA (the Food Safety Modernization Act), according to Jane Wilson, AHPA's director of program development. Ingredient supply companies are now covered by FSMA, but they also have to keep an eye out toward dietary supplement GMPs.
