NATIONAL PANCAKE DAY | SEPTEMBER 26

National Pancake Day on September 26th sets up a tall stack of syrupy goodness to celebrate! Set the table. Mix up the batter. Heat up the griddle. Because the butter is ready to melt and the flapjacks are delicious!

Also known as Johnnycakes, griddle cakes or hotcakes, this batter-made breakfast item dates back more than 30,000 years. In fact, it may be the oldest breakfast food in history.

It became a traditional part of Fat Tuesday (Shrove Tuesday) celebrations when revelers would feast before fasting. They still do! The thin cakes can be rolled and filled with fruit and other fillings. Usually, though, they’re stacked and drizzled with flavored syrup.

Add fruit, nuts or whipped topping, too. While served mostly as a breakfast item, pancakes along with bacon, ham, hashbrowns and other morning offerings also make a delicious supper. Breakfast for dinner is a nice change of pace in many homes.

Luxury men’s retailer moves to Canal Place

By: CityBusiness staff reports

Q Clothier | Rye 51, a dual concept men’s retailer, has relocated their New Orleans store to Canal Place.

The Dallas-based store originally opened months in the South Market downtown neighborhood, before the COVID-19 shutdown in 2020. It is now located on the second floor of Canal Place, located at 333 Canal St., Suite 219.

Q Clothier, an upscale men’s store that offers custom clothing and personal style guidance, opened its first store in 2003. Rye 51 offers small-batch selections of clothing, accessories and more for men.

The retailer has styled sports stars including Zion Williamson, Joe Buck, Troy Aikman and Jared Goff and is the official clothier of “Monday Night Football,” a news release said. It has nine locations across the Midwest and Southeast.

This is the first time the retailer has opened a store in an indoor shopping mall, according to its founder and president, Raja Ratan, who says business so far has been “outstanding.”

In May, Canal Place announced that international luxury fashion retailer Golden Goose, an Italian-based luxury fashion line known for its sneakers, would open a store by the end of the year.

Mac Rebennack, best known as Dr. John, was 77 when he died June 6, 2019, of a heart attack. Three years later, Rounder Records will release his farewell studio album, “Things Happen That Way,” on CD and via streaming services on Friday; the vinyl version, held up by manufacturing issues, arrives Oct. 14.

NATIONAL DUMPLING DAY | SEPTEMBER 26

National Dumpling Day on September 26th serves up a delicious treat to celebrate. With the popularity of dumplings growing all the time, the day offers a great way to celebrate! Whether enjoyed as an appetizer or the main course, each morsel satisfies.

Dumplings offer so much variety and flavor. They create a beautiful accompaniment to any meal, too. The endless possibilities of shape and taste make dumplings a favorite dish around the world.

Dumplings consist of small pieces of dough. Generally, but not always, the dough is wrapped around a filling. Both flavor and cooking methods factor into the wide variety of dumplings available, too. The dough may be composed of flour, potatoes, or bread. The fillings come in many forms – meat, fish, vegetables, or sweets. Dumplings can be cooked in many different ways, too. Some of the methods include boiling, steaming, simmering, and even frying. While dumplings are often eaten on their own, they are a delicious addition to soups and stews, too

Ain't There (dere) No More - New Orleans

Keith Pop Evans

Napoleon and St. Charles

Derby Gisclair

A photograph by John Norris Teunnison from 1900 looking up Canal Street toward the lake from a vantage point between Magazine and Camp Streets on the left and Decatur and Chartres Streets on the right.

This is a fairly typical scene at the time with no automobiles but plenty of draymen hauling freight and cargo both ways on either direction on Canal Street and the neutral ground (median) chock full of streetcars. The one notable exception is the statue of Henry Clay that should have been just about dead center in the background at the St. Charles Avenue – Royal Street intersection.

The statue of Henry Clay had been a fixture on Canal Street for more than forty years and was not only a landmark but was also a popular meeting place. The statue, which now stands in the center of Lafayette Square, had become an impediment to streetcar traffic and had to be relocated. Looking at the sea of streetcars on Canal Street one can understand the city’s decision.

When the New Orleans City Council voted unanimously to rename Jefferson Davis Parkway in Mid-City to Norman C. Francis Parkway in August 2020, it confirmed what many across the country knew: the retired Xavier University of Louisiana president is a living legend, an icon worthy of every tribute he has earned during a more than 70- year long career.

In a new WYES-TV documentary, DR. NORMAN C. FRANCIS: A LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP, Dr. Francis will reflect on his monumental life in a one-on-one interview. Archival photos, video and interviews with Dr. Francis’ family, friends and colleagues will document his career of service and leadership.

The one-hour documentary narrated by former WWL-TV anchor Sally-Ann Roberts will premiere on Tuesday, September 27 at 8:00 p.m. on WYES-TV, wyes.org/live and on the free WYES and PBS apps. It will also stream for a limited time on the WYES YouTube channel.

Rebirth Brass Band EVERY Tuesday at Zony Mash!

Zony Mash Beer Project

Zony Mash is proud to be the home of Rebirth Brass Band EVERY Tuesday

Doors at 7pm, Show at 8pm

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.

This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.

  • Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce 15.25
  • topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce 15.25
  • topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Optional add-ons:
  • Shrimp 10.95
  • Crabmeat 9.95
  • Chicken 6.95
  • Side of Fettuccine 9.50
  • topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
  • Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
  • Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
  • Our full menu is also available.
  • Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.

We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

Regarded by many theatre professionals as the finest musical ever created, Gypsy is the ultimate tale of an ambitious stage mother fighting for her daughters’ success – while secretly yearning for her own. Set all across America in the 1920s and 30s, when vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born, Arthur Laurents’ landmark show explores the world of two-bit show business with brass, humor, heart, and sophistication.
