First Congregational Church of Ann Arbor
Submitted by Rev. Dr. Darcy Crain and her congregation.
Sharing a story about a new thing they tried this year.
A Blues Christmas Experience was an opportunity for people to grieve, process, pray, and experience incredible music. A jazz saxophone led an instrumental version of The River while a young person was able to write the name of their recently passed grandmother on a star and walk it forward to join others in their own journeys. Through the lighting of four different candles, interactive prayer stations, and inspiring music, the community held a space for all they brought into the longest night of the year.
Many of the musicians students and families were present so there were many new faces in attendance.
Congregation and leaders learned that introducing professional musicians into worship doesn't have to be a performance. Working collaboratively with the community can create an experience that furthers a shared vision with folks who wouldn't normally attend church events.
Upon leaving, a member said: "wow, that was a deep spiritual experience, thank you."
And all people sighed: amen.
