STORIES SHARED

A BLUES CHRISTMAS EXPERIENCE

(image features Rev. Lily Tinker Fortel and a stage full of musicians)

First Congregational Church of Ann Arbor

Submitted by Rev. Dr. Darcy Crain and her congregation.

Sharing a story about a new thing they tried this year.

A Blues Christmas Experience was an opportunity for people to grieve, process, pray, and experience incredible music. A jazz saxophone led an instrumental version of The River while a young person was able to write the name of their recently passed grandmother on a star and walk it forward to join others in their own journeys. Through the lighting of four different candles, interactive prayer stations, and inspiring music, the community held a space for all they brought into the longest night of the year.

Many of the musicians students and families were present so there were many new faces in attendance.

Congregation and leaders learned that introducing professional musicians into worship doesn't have to be a performance. Working collaboratively with the community can create an experience that furthers a shared vision with folks who wouldn't normally attend church events.

Upon leaving, a member said: "wow, that was a deep spiritual experience, thank you."

And all people sighed: amen.

A whole lot of FUN!!

A special thanks to all who were present, and all who helped support and organize this wonderful opportunity for fellowship. Youth shared that they love how the church helps them find friends, builds community,

teaches them new things, and feeds them!!

It was a wonderful weekend filled with all that, and MORE!!

Register for February 9

Microplastics in the Great Lakes is an emerging water quality issue that has a huge potential of impacting human health and the aquatic environment. It has been estimated that microplastics are consumed by the US population at a rate of 5 grams per week; this is the weight of a credit card. Microplastics are found in our food, water, air, and even beer along the Great Lakes. Read more here.
