| | At the end of July, the world will tune in to collectively watch the Olympic torch be lit once again for an exciting summer Olympic games in Paris! But at the START of July, DCC families across the globe will be taking up their own torches to light the way for a day very dear to the heart of the NODCC: DCC Awareness Day! Occurring on July 2nd, the exact middle day of the year, DCC Awareness Day is celebrated to provide education on the corpus callosum, how it acts as a connection between the two hemispheres of the brain, and how disorders of the corpus callosum affect individuals and families. That’s why July 2nd is such a perfect day to celebrate – as this day connects the two halves of the year just as the corpus callosum connects the two halves of the brain. This exciting annual day of recognition began in 2015 when the NODCC, AusDoCC and Corpal, the three largest family organizations supporting disorders of the corpus callosum (DCC) around the world collaborated to establish this day. It has only grown since that first year, and in 2024 we invite YOU to ignite your own torch of knowledge and light the way for friends and family to join our mission of making the world aware of the realities and resilience of those with DCCs!
Why participate? We deeply believe awareness brings understanding, and understanding brings action. Action is what we need to channel resources, research, and funding toward Disorders of the Corpus Callosum, which lifts our entire community! So this year, be part of the chain reaction: awareness to understanding to action!
How can you bring awareness?
- Take a photo or video on a bridge and share it on your social media pages and on the NODCC social posts. You can also change your profile picture on Facebook to the image. In your photo on a bridge, you can hold up a photo of your loved one with a DCC (or have them with you), hold up the DCC Awareness Day logo or any of the 6 images below, or any other creative idea you can think of!
-
Like, comment on, and share our posts on Facebook (facebook.com/NODCC/) and Instagram (instagram.com/livingwithdcc)
-
Add a DCC frame to your Facebook profile pic using the Canva template linked HERE.
- Educate your community: Disorders of the corpus callosum are not as rare as we thought when the NODCC was established. Recent data analysis shows a frequency of diagnosis for DCC (in individuals under the age of one year) to be 1 in every 2,053 individuals. Help bring these statistics to light by sharing them with those in your circle!
