NEW PESTS THREATEN NORTHWEST LANDSCAPES

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is a new pest in the Pacific Northwest, first detected in Forest Grove in 2022. It has now been identified in Washington, Yamhill, Marion, and Clackamas counties surrounding Portland. It is estimated that it will spread to the Puget Sound region in the next few years.

EAB is a destructive wood-boring beetle from Asia that was first discovered on the East Coast in 2002 and is estimated to have killed over 100 million trees to date. It threatens to destroy many native and landscape ash trees without control treatment.

We are not currently experiencing Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) in the Puget Sound region, but we want to warn you of this potentially devastating pest. In Oregon, we are proposing a combination of options in budget proposals for this coming year and beyond. These options will include chemical treatment as well as long-term replacement strategies. Control will likely be required indefinitely and cannot guarantee 100% effectiveness, so replacement may be a better long-term solution.
