NEW PESTS THREATEN NORTHWEST LANDSCAPES

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is a new pest in the Pacific Northwest, first detected in Forest Grove in 2022. It has now been identified in Washington, Yamhill, Marion, and Clackamas counties. EAB is a destructive wood-boring beetle from Asia that was first discovered on the East Coast in 2002 and is estimated to have killed over 100 million trees to date. It threatens to destroy many native landscapes and Ash trees without control treatment.

We will be proposing a combination of options in budget proposals for this coming year and beyond. These options will include chemical treatment as well as long-term replacement strategies. Control will likely be required indefinitely and cannot guarantee 100% effectiveness, so replacement may be a better long-term solution.
