Pentecost Sunday

From Sarah Norris, Events and Fellowship Committee Chair:

Thank you to all who served in a multitude of ways for our Pentecost BBQ! Applause still rings throughout our church for great food, skilled grillers, and our fabulous staff, Allen, Cheryl, Sue, and Ben, a superstar for setting up everything, rain or shine! Blessed we were for over 100 attending and cash donations of $560 to help pay for it! We are reconnecting after a year unimaginable! Combining Pentecost, Youth Sunday, and the Confirmation of Josh Garcia and Mari Carr was a brilliant plan!

We need to hear if you liked that, too!
COVID Protocol Update
The guidance from the Centers for Disease Control suggests, "If you have been fully vaccinated, you can resume activities that you did prior to the pandemic."
The Session has made these changes in the protocol for activities at the church:
· Masks will not be required for entry into the building.
· In the sanctuary, all pews will be available for seating.
· Congregational singing is welcome.

Continuing restrictions include:
· Observing room capacity limits.

Additionally, receiving the offering and distribution of the elements for the Lord's Supper will continue in the "self-serve" mode. These actions of worship are not engaging for those who are watching the livestream worship service, which continues to reach as many or more people as those who attend the service in-person.

Reverend Jane Pettit Preaches This Sunday
Reverend Jane Pettit will be in the pulpit this Sunday. Jane recently retired after serving as Pastor at First Presbyterian Church, Kingsville. Allen and Anne will be in Chicago for a quick visit with Andy, Ally, and Gus.

Save the Date
The Educational Ministries Committee and the Events and Fellowship Committee are cosponsoring several special family friendly events this summer. Mark your calendar for these special events:

June 14     Pool Party at the Santa Fe Swim Club
July 18      Picnic-TBD
August 22 Ice Cream Social in the newly remodeled Fellowship Hall

Fellowship Hall Update
The electrical work has been completed. The next steps are installation of the remaining ceiling tiles, window shades, and flooring. The window shades are expected to leave the manufacturer on June 1 and be installed on June 11. Once that is finished, the scissorjack can be removed and the new flooring installed.

Parkway Ringers plan to continue to meet on Wednesday nights through June at 7:00 in the sanctuary.  If you would like to try out handbells this would be a fun time to join us - nothing too hard.   Call Joyce Wilcox at 361-779-9665 for more information.

Endowment Funds and Grant Applications Due June 1

Annually, grants are awarded from the Parkway Presbyterian Church General Endowment in three areas: education, benevolences, and capital improvements. These funds are distributed roughly in thirds to each designated area. This year the Endowment Committee has over $13,000 available for distribution.
Grant applications are available from the church office or online at should be completed and returned to the church office by June 1, 2021. A Distribution Task Force will make recommendations to the Session. The Session will vote on the distribution of funds at its June meeting and the funds will be distributed thereafter.

Is the Hope Academy Wall Important?  --
Why is the Hope Academy wall important? In the safe confines of Hope Academy, the girls' experiences can change their lives and perhaps, even the world! Tree 4 Hope recently shared great news about the girls' academic progress; they were thrilled to report that those who began their school journey at Hope Academy are scoring very high and progressing rapidly in their reading abilities. Much to their surprise, many of the 1st and 2nd grade girls are reading at a higher level than the 4th and 5th graders, who are now working to catch up after years in the public schools. Tree 4 Hope is committed to helping the older girls reach their academic potential, but is also excited to see how effectively Hope Academy's learning model is helping their younger girls excel. The girls are rocketing past where they would have been in public school and have so much potential for the future!

Our investment in Hope Academy helps to create this bright future. We are very close to our goal of $20,000 for the wall completion; thanks to recent donations, the total raised has jumped to $18,640! Please consider a gift to help us complete the wall project and secure the educational foundation for these girls.

Click here or click on the "Give Now" button at the top right of the church website and then use the dropdown menu to select "Hope Academy Security Wall." You can also write a check to the church noting the donation is for "Security Wall."

Please watch this video for an update on the progress of the security wall.
