Greetings to you on this Holy Thursday! How are you? We have just entered into the Triduum. That's a fancy way in Latin to refer to “Three Days” which were so significant in the life of Jesus. Specifically, it began with the Last Supper in the Upper Room. From there Jesus went with his friends the disciples into the Garden of Gethsemane. Our Lord prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will” (Matthew 26:39).
Not long thereafter Jesus was betrayed by Judas Iscariot and led away to the Sanhedrin in the midst of the darkness. As this took place Peter followed at a distance and warmed himself by the light of a fire. However, it did not give off the same warmth of Love and Mercy as Jesus the Light of the World did and out of fear for his own life he denied knowing him.
As the saying goes we know “the rest of the story” with the pseudo “trial” of Jesus before Pontius Pilate and then his subsequent crucifixion. Jesus the Christ and Savior of humankind willingly carried his cross, suffered excruciating pain for you and me, and then commended his spirit to God the Father (Luke 23:46).
While today is April 1st and has historically been called “April Fools' Day” there is nothing foolish and there are no jokes to tell about the tremendous Love that God has for each and every one of us to the point of dying upon a cross for our salvation. May these holiest of days in this holiest of weeks be a time to prayerfully ponder the great Love that God has shared with us so that we would “go and do likewise” (Luke 10:37).
