Falling Leaves and Fading Light
Join us and our partners this November for upcoming events!
| Some of the most intriguing astronomy events of the year will unfold in the November night sky. Taurid meteor showers reach their apex in the first two weeks, a total lunar eclipse is happening on Nov. 8th, and the Leonid meteor shower is predicted for Nov. 17-18! | |
|
Leonid Meteor Shower
Every 33 years, viewers can witness this celestial event where meteors shoot through the night sky at an average of 10-15 meteors per hour. Leonids are bright and often colorful. They travel at speeds of 44 miles per second and are considered some of the fastest. And sometimes the shower can turn into a storm. On November 17, 1966, rates were as high as thousands of meteors per minute during a fifteen-minute span, where meteors did, it seems, fall like rain. Photo: BLM
