As we bid goodbye to 2018 and embrace the New Year, I feel a little torn between reflecting back on an incredible year and looking forward.

On the one hand, this past year was one of increased stability, unprecedented growth and enthusiastic engagement, culminating in our best convention to date. Over those four days in Cleveland, hundreds of young Hispanics walked away with new jobs. Thousands of connections were made, between members and companies and universities, professionals and students, leaders and emerging leaders, and across generations.

In celebration of National Mentoring Month, our goal is to grow and foster our MentorSHPE program , which offers SHPE members an invaluable opportunity to mentor or be mentored as part of a carefully guided program. We would love to see you join this program!

According to last year’s My MentorSHPE Story contest winners, Krisbel Pinango and Brandon Santos, the MentorSHPE program “provides a platform of growth for both individuals but also allows the pair to experiment with what works best for them. It develops teamwork, trust, and familia.”

SHPE Regional Leadership Development Conferences (RLDCs) empower undergraduate and graduate students as well as professional members to realize their fullest potential. The training equips them to lead in their chapters and at work. Guided by experienced leaders, RLDC participants are fully inspired to impact the community through STEM.

CEO Raquel Tamez has been invited to serve on the advisory board for the Internet of Business (IoB) , an organization that analyzes how the Internet of Things, robotics, AI, machine learning, sensors, blockchain, analytics, virtual and augmented reality, 5G, and a range of other technologies are transforming connected business and making organizations of every size more efficient, productive, and profitable. Raquel will also be speaking at their Internet of Manufacturing event on June 5-6 in Chicago.
The NBC affiliate in Cleveland, Ohio offers an ongoing “Girls in STEM” series, so they leapt at the chance to interview some STEM heavyweights while SHPE was in town for the National Convention.

Every month in 2019, Vision , an online leadership magazine, will be featuring SHPE member leaders who are doing amazing things in the world. We’ll be sharing these each month, but we’re lucky to have four already published to kick off the year.
The kick-off celebration for the 2020 International Science & Engineering Fair was at the Discovery Cube OC last month and SHPE’s Dora Renaud was there. See the photos from the event.
