THE CEO CORNER
When I took the CEO position a year ago, I was told to think of SHPE as my familia, my family. In this spirit, I have spent my first year getting to know you -traveling throughout the country to meet students and professional members, as well as SHPE leaders, volunteers, and industry partners.
Now I would like to begin my second year - official as of June 1 - with a series of messages directly to you. These messages will help you discover who I am as a person and a Latina leader. They will also clarify my dreams and hopes for SHPE, Hispanics in STEM, and the Latino community.
Where they appear, I’m calling this The CEO Corner, a reference to my love of boxing and a reminder that I’m always in your corner, fighting for your best interests. So here’s Round 1: a very broad update on my many actions these past 12 months, to be elaborated on in the coming months. With plenty of help, I’ve been:
- Outlining SHPE’s corporate strategy and defining our corporate values, developing new policies, procedures, and internal controls while integrating and optimizing SHPE’s business systems at the national office for maximum efficiencies;
- Formulating and implementing a marketing and communications plan, which has involved revisiting SHPEs branding and messaging, increasing our use of social media, having a presence on Capitol Hill for the first time, and creating a new website (soon-to-be-unveiled);
- Clarifying SHPE’s value proposition and member benefits, which has included developing additional programs, services, and approaches;
- Transforming our major events into national programs and ensuring they are based on logic models with measurable outcomes for those involved in and impacted by them;
- Creating partnerships with corporations, academic institutions, and other STEM- and Hispanic-focused organizations and events - vital for our influence and our diversification;
- Setting the stage for a potential merger of SHPE and MAES: Latinos in Science and Engineering, a strategy that would boost our resources and influence, give us a stronger voice as an organization, and diversify our membership.
This list just scratches the surface, and I look forward to sharing many other developments. All told, as SHPE enters a new fiscal year, it enters a new phase - Round 2, if you will. Ensuring value to our members and partners is the priority, with a renewed focus on our Professional and Lifetime members, as is taking a hard look at our overall governance and chapter management. Our rebranding will be increasingly evident. And that means you will be more looped in than ever as we seek your insights and ideas.
“Better Together,” after all, is the theme of our annual
National Convention
, and these substantial changes are based on conversations with members and partners of SHPE. These aren’t my ideas; they’re ours. So stay posted for the next CEO Corner, which will be on a more specific topic, and please stay connected to me through
LinkedIn
and
Twitter
.
Sincerely,
Raquel Tamez
CEO

|
SHPE CEO Raquel Tamez spoke at the 2018 HISPA Youth Conference at St. Mary’s University. The conference had a positive impact in the lives of 150 middle school students as they experienced a day of inspiration, hands –on learning, and plenty of amazing role models. One attendee said, “Raquel Tamez inspired me and helped me understand who I am. I learned nobody is perfect, and that you can achieve your goals no matter your race.”

SHPE and the 50K Coalition are making progress on the initiative to graduate 50,000 diverse engineers annually by 2025. Recent activities include the submission of a $12.5M NSF Alliance proposal, the 50K Alliance National Convening in DC, and the strategy development of the Community College Action Network Group (CC ANG) Action Plan.
SHPE is the executive sponsor of the CC ANG Action Plan, which has a goal of increasing the number of community college students who are emotionally, socially, and academically prepared to enter into and successfully complete engineering degree programs. Next steps include investigating different models to identify best-practices from exemplar programs; developing models to support students who are struggling with the costs of higher education; and to implement regional hubs and scale up what is working effectively. 50K is leading the way!
