SHPE WORKS WITH DISCOVERe
SHPE and its members eagerly participated in a series of events orchestrated and executed by DISCOVERe, an organization that helps unite, mobilize, and support the engineering and technology volunteer communities.

Engineers Week (February 18-24) is a time to celebrate how engineers make a difference in our world, increase public dialogue about the need for engineers, and bring engineering to life for kids, educators, and parents. During the week, DISCOVERe also hosted Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day to inspire girls' futures. And following up on Engineering Week, DISCOVERe will launch the 2018 Global Marathon , a 5-week series of online conversations for women pursuing a career in engineering and technology.
SHPE leader Mauro Rodriguez was featured by DISCOVERe during Engineers Week.
SHPE leader Ximena Aristizabal participated in the Introducing a Girl to Engineering Day Twitter chat.
CEO Raquel Tamez joined other executives for an Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day briefing on Capitol Hill.
SHPE leader Brianne Martin will moderate a Global Marathon conversation about "Advancing Your Career and Personal Brand Through Social Media" on March 7 at 12pm ET. Register now!
SUPPORTING DREAMERS
SHPE is committed to supporting the members of Congress who are standing by Dreamers. To reinforce that commitment, we've hired a public policy firm in D.C. and we’ve been meeting with like-minded individuals and legislators who have joined a bipartisan group to discuss and craft legislation on STEM-related issues.

Our goals in these meetings are to educate members on who SHPE is, how we can be a resource to them, and to offer our expertise on STEM-related issues. We are also sharing with them our support for DACA legislation and Dreamers, many of whom are pursuing STEM education and careers.

Over 80% of the American people want Congress to pass a law that puts American Dreamers on a clear path to full citizenship. We need your voices to be heard, so we urge you to take action with us because we are better together !

WAYS TO TAKE ACTION:
  • Call your Senator and tell them to support Dreamers. Visit this site to find a script on what to say and the phone number to call your U.S. Senator.
  • Register now so you can vote in the midterm elections on November 6. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 33 of the 100 seats in the Senate will be contested. More information here.
  • Support SHPE’s advocacy efforts by making a tax-deductible donation.

¡Adelante por que sí se puede!

New Jersey Institute of Technology SHPE
4th Annual 12 Corazones
12 Corzaones, inspired by the popular show of the same name from Telemundo, involves 12 male and 12 female contestants looking for their soul mate. This was the inspiration for our annual chapter development event and offered a lot of fun, laughter, and a break from classes. Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity Inc. (LUL) co-sponsored the event. Contestants had to use their best pick up line, show off their dancing moves, participate in a balloon popping challenge, and more. The winning couple was rewarded with a gift card to AMC Theaters and a Valentine’s Day gift. Thanks to the efforts of our executive board, SHPE members, and members of LUL, the event was a success with a crowd of over 74 attendees.
University of Miami
E-Week Diversity Picnic
A collaboration between UM SHPE and Fast Enterprises to host a picnic for engineering students to kickoff the College of Engineering's annual E-Week events! Members enjoyed tasty food and were able to network with professional industry partners in a casual setting before the week's career fair.

QRR MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
The first 2018 Quarterly Regional Review (QRR) meeting was held this month.

QRRs offer an environment of support, solutions, and feedback to SHPE’s Regional Leadership on an ongoing basis throughout the year. They are designed to bring the Regional Vice-Presidents together to review regional key accomplishments, regional and chapter best practices, and to discuss current successes and challenges in each region.

Some of the successes that were shared included:

  • Region 1 held a Bomba Blast in October with resume reviews and mock interviews.
  • Region 3 has seen weekly study nights developed within chapters, offering an opportunity for peer-to-peer mentorship.
  • Region 4 has had success with communication between the professional and student chapters.
  • Region 5 held 3 sub-regional retreats with networking and workshops on topics such as leadership, communication, and personality type evaluation.
  • Region 7 established a partnership with Lockheed Martin’s HOLA (Hispanic Organization for Leadership Awareness) in Marietta, GA.
