Safety Tip of the Month:

Do You Have Emergency Stickers On Your Windows?

Make sure and protect your pets when they are left home alone or in the event of a disaster. If a firefighter or emergency responder sees these stickers they will make an effort to search for the pets without compromising human safety. Stickers should be placed on all doors to the outside and any big windows.

Claire

Oh Claire!

Claire is a delight who also happens to be a pretty little female Shih Tzu with personality plus. Her story, like so many, was not a happy one. However, she has adapted well to life at the rescue and has morphed into a vibrant and playful young girl who welcomes all the attention, affection and love she's been receiving. Claire enjoys a comfy lap and will often give sweet little kisses. She also likes being out in the yard and has a humorous and fun side to her personality.
Claire is a small female, about 3 years of age and 10 lbs. Her right eye is very small and non-visual , our ophthalmologist thinks is probably congenital. Her left eye is healthy and she has good vision. From my personal experience, Shih Tzu's do adapt well to having vision in one eye only. It certainly is not slowing this little girl down as you can see when you watch her video on our website; you can also view her video by clicking on her picture.  Claire is looking forward to sharing her adorable personality with the right forever family.
Think about making Halloween a treat, no trick, for sweet Claire! Only you can give Claire a new home and a new life. Speaking of only you, have you heard the song "Only You" by the Platters. Click on the link below to listen and enjoy.

Shelter News:

--Featured Adoptions:

We've been busy! We have a few special adoptions to share with you this month:

Chloe Faye:

Chloe Faye, our adorable ShihPoo girl had several people interested in her, but as soon as we spoke with her new paw-rents, we knew they would be perfect for her. Her new mom and dad drove some distance to our shelter and only wanted to meet her! Can you blame them :)

Happy life Chloe Faye - keep in touch!

Star:

Our beautiful schnauzer girl has been adopted by her new mom and dad (dad not in the picture) who were only looking for a schnauzer. They fell in love with Star right away. Pictured here with her new mom and her new human big sister, this beautiful, very sweet girl now has a home and family of her own.

Best wishes Star!

Fiona Mae:

Fiona Mae is our little poodle girl who now has found two new dads (one dad not in the picture) and her forever home. She is the sweetest and friendliest little girl who will make her dad absolutely adore her. We will miss you, but are very excited about your new life.

Sweet dreams in your new home little girl!

Heyward:

This adorable Shih Tzu boy has gained incredible paw-rents and two lovely human sisters. The whole family is excited to bring home their new baby boy. We cannot help smiling at this perfect family photo.

Congratulations Heyward!

Jasper:

Jasper, our beautiful honorary Shih Tzu boy, was adopted by a mom who fell in love with him at first site. Jasper came to the rescue by being thrown over our fence in the middle of the night, and ever since we have prayed for a happily ever after life for him. We couldn't think of a better home for this wonderful boy, who now also has a new sister, Aubrey Rose, another Shih Tzu Rescue Alumni.

Happy Life Beautiful Boy!

--Birthday Shout-Outs & Alumni Alerts:

Does your fur baby have a birthday in the month of October? If so let us know and we will give a birthday shout-out in our next monthly newsletter.

Meet Benjamin James! He is a Shih Tzu Rescue Alumni and also a birthday boy who turned 14 years young in September. Mom, Mary, says he is the best dog she has ever had! Thanks for sending in his picture and Happy Belated Birthday!!

Our sweet Amber is turning 12 on October 15th. She is the first female dog that I personally have ever had and is the sweetest, most stubborn, low key, walks to her own beat, lovely, precious and delicious little girl. In other words she is a Shih Tzu!

Happy Birthday Amberlicious - we love you tons!

Ask Amber:

- Does your dog need advice about human behavior that only a trained dog advisor can answer? Ask Amber!.

Amber is one of the editor's dogs who, of course, is a Shih Tzu Rescue Alumni:

  • Dear Amber,

Mom keeps holding me up in front of a mirror saying "see - it's you". However, I just see some strange dog looking back at me. Do dogs normally recognize themselves in a mirror?

~~Imageless

  • Dear Imageless,

No, dogs do not see themselves in a mirror. Instead, they see the reflection as if it is another dog which can lead to playfulness, barking or aggressive behavior. Dogs primarily rely on their sense of smell for self-recognition, not sight. Over time dogs learn to ignore mirrors realizing that the strange dog is not real and will not cause any harm. Give your mom a lick to let her know you love her next time she holds you in front of the mirror, and we'll keep this a secret between us :)

~~With pearls of wisdom & a perfectly fluffed tail, Amber

Send us your fun dog questions for Amber and we will feature them here!
