October 2019
As we enter the fall season, days get a little darker and rainy and more time is spent indoors. When you feel closed in or isolated during the darker days, remember, as we read in 1 John, "God is light,” the apostle reminded us, “and in Him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5).

October is also a season where we remember godly reformers like Martin Luther, who confronted the spiritual darkness around him and brought the light of God’s Word to shine brighter and bring the truth of Jesus. Luther had a dream in which he stood before God. Satan was there to accuse Luther, and when the books were opened the accuser pointed to sin after sin in his life. Luther despaired. Then he remembered the cross and, turning to the devil, he quoted 1 John 1:7, “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”

Let the light of God’s love, and the Savior Jesus be your light in the midst of any darkness you may face, physically or spiritually. Stay strong in the Word as we go through the Bible this year. We are off to a great start in “The Story!” Be open to these opportunities in our newsletter this month to keep you focused on staying in the light of God’s love and in fellowship with others. Here are a few highlights:

  • “The Story” Sunday worship and Community Groups
  • Prayer Night on Oct. 2
  • “Elevate” Fall fellowship hiking event on Oct. 12
  • Fall Festival fun for all on Oct. 27

See you soon at Hope! “Give ‘em heaven!”

How long have you been at Community of Hope: I've been at Hope now for just over a year.
It has sure gone by quickly!

What do you do at the church, and what do you like about working at CoH? As pastor, it
is a privilege to lead the church in worship and prayer. In addition to preaching God's Word and teaching, I really enjoy working together with our staff and volunteers as we plan events for the church. Mission trips are another great ministry that I have had the opportunity to participate in, bringing the good news of Jesus to people all over the world. Prayer is powerful, and I especially have the privilege to pray with people from church at homes, hospitals or wherever they may be.

A special prayer request for my family would be especially for our son Josh, helping lead an "Around The World" study abroad trip as a graduate assistant for Concordia University/Irvine,
and for our son Andrew, studying in Italy this fall with Seattle Pacific University. Thank you for your prayers and for your partnership in ministry at Hope!
Community of Hope's greatest assets are its members and regular attenders, its many volunteers, and its church staff. We accomplish so many great things for Jesus through the efforts of all of us working together. We would like to show our appreciation for everybody that contributes to who we are and what we do in the name of Jesus. We decided to start this process by highlighting our dedicated Community of Hope employees.

Storage Facility Update
Our storage facility team has been meeting for the last several months to develop a project plan for building a new storage facility. This involves identifying the requirements from the City of Wilsonville for permits, evaluating storage needs by different groups within the Church and discussing the size and type of storage facility. Our overriding goal is to build something that will complement the current Church appearance and stand the test of time.

We received our funding and currently have approved spending for the site plan survey that is needed to determine the grading requirements and site placement. The survey work is being scheduled to occur within the next couple of weeks. Once complete we will apply for an early grading permit and schedule with the excavation company doing work next door to do our work in the next few months.

Next steps:
Complete Survey
Apply for Grading Permit
Develop Site Plan with Structural Concepts

Our goal is to host a short update meeting after the 10:30 am worship service near the end of October. For more information or questions, please contact Brenda Melum: melumlb@gmail.com

I was nervous but I bought 150 of The Story books, believing that all of us would benefit from reading scripture from cover to cover. As of Sunday, September 29 th, I have only 5 books left! That means at least 145 people are exploring scripture with the opportunity to talk about what they have read and feel strengthened by knowing more fully what God has put in print for them because of His love for all of us!! And as if that were not enough, I printed 30 of The Story Women’s study notebooks, too!! I have 4 of those notebooks left! God is good and His messages to us are so important for us to understand. Thank you, all for participating. Give your book away when you are done with it. Think of the exponential opportunity for spreading The Story!
Wow! What a wonderful crew of folks showed up for our workday on Saturday 9/28! We worked inside and outside the church building. We cleaned the Sound booth and almost lost Pat Baker and Pastor John to the dust bunnies! Linda Baker and Rhonda Boone cleaned and shined the windows and doors so we can, actually see folks coming and going, Yay! The mighty Stephanie Goldman cleaned the entire East Wing hallway carpet! Walter Reyes, Pat Baker, Stephen Boone, Jim Kenney, Bill Amadon and Jerrold Lipps painted our library and W8 classroom and managed to get everything back into its proper place before worship on Sunday, too!! Richard Goldman assembled steel racks and put all our table linens into one place for the first time, ever!! Chris Utterback led the charge into the garden, Richard trimmed the bushes, Rhonda and Stephanie tended the flowers and Walter, Christian, Jerrold and Jim hauled everything away!! What a day and what a blessing to all of us. Thank you!!
Our 1 st Wednesdays Supper & Prayer time began on Wednesday, October 3 rd. The richness of the sharing of Communion and praying with and for one another heightens our awareness of the presence of the Lord. We are blessed by the lyrics of carefully chosen worship music and blessed by the gifted singing of our worship leaders. The testimonial sharing and the scripture readings make us all rejoice in the power of Jesus presence. We will do this again on November 6 th, please be sure to join us!
Maybe you have noticed the beautiful flowers that have been appearing on the altar each week, and the messages in the bulletin about who sponsored the flowers and what the celebration or memorial is that they signify. But if you have not noticed, check out the bottom of the Worship Volunteers sheet on the back of the bulletin. If you would like to donate flowers to put on the altar, for a birthday, anniversary, memorial or any other reason, sign up on the flowers board in the entryway. You can fill out an envelope, put in your donation ($25), put the envelope in the offering basket and Crystal Stanaway will contact you to finish with the details. The sign-up board is filling up! Check it out, soon!
