This Saturday, June 14th, is celebrated in the United States as Flag Day to commemorate the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the national flag on June 14th, 1777. I am not sure why, but Flag Day has always been an emotional day for me… I still puff out my chest when I see the flag flying proudly, and yes, I still often choke up when I see it billowing in the breeze.
I recently reread the book “Flags of Our Fathers”, the story of the herculean effort to fly the flag over Mt Suribachi on Iwo Jima, one of the bloodiest battles of WWII. In that battle, a roar came over the entire island when the US troops saw the flag flying from the highest point on the island, and the mere sight of it turned the battle around in our favor. Yes, the flag still “does it for me” because of what it represents.
As you know, our club proudly displays “Old Glory” every week, and we address it when we say the pledge…it is always very moving emotionally for me.
I am also proud to say that our club will soon be flying a new “flag”… ok, it is a “banner”, but it will be introduced at our next in person meeting. It is the District Governor Banner, in honor of our own Dick Harris becoming the District 6980 District Governor for 2025-2026!
Dick, we are PROUD OF YOU, and THANK YOU for taking on this new role. We will be thinking of you when we see this banner, as you will be visiting other clubs during the year.
God Bless!
Dan
