Reflection of the Week from the Racial Justice Team

“We breastfeed our children for so many various reasons, and many of those reasons are altruistic, caring, and self- sacrificing. But Black Maternal Health Week (4/11-4/17) is the perfect time to remember that it is actually ok to claim the fact that some of us breastfeed because it improves our own health as well, reducing our susceptibility to breast cancer, improving our odds of secure and deep bonding, which makes disciplining our children easier and more seamless. It's actually fine to affirm that some of us do it for ourselves. We do it to begin to heal the broken part of the circle that was tossed and ripped out of alignment the day some of our ancestors were torn apart from the arms of their loved ones to come to so many shores so far away.

“It is our personal Sankofa because as we bring our babies to our breasts, and linger there just a bit longer, we welcome them home and into the fold again and again. We battle against our historical and lived memory of the many ways our people are broken apart and separated. We refuse to participate in the violence. We hold our children close and then closer. We hide them a little longer if we must. Yes, we do it for ourselves. Knowing intrinsically that our survival is completely tied up in their own.”

Announcing a Five-Week Book Discussion Series: Caste by Pulitzer-prize winning author Isabel Wilkerson

Please join us as we read and discuss this powerful book which examines the unspoken caste system in America:

Book Club Announces Title for May 2 Meeting.

Such A Fun Age by Kiley Reid is the RUCC Book Group selection for its upcoming meeting on May 2, on Zoom, at noon. The presenter will be Charletta Campfield, and Zoom information is found elsewhere in the View. Everyone is always welcome!

"Walk in Their Shoes" - Virtual Fundraiser for YouthHope on May 13, 6:

YouthHope's annual "Walk in Their Shoes" banquet is going virtual this year. This event is a very powerful awareness night that shares youth's perspective with the group's supporters. YouthHope is using a professional videography company, and the video will share real stories, thank yous from youth, and other important information.

The event will be hosted through the YouthHope website on May 13 at 6:30 p.m. This format offers the potential to reach a wider audience, raise funds and raise awareness of local youth homelessness.

Military Honors' Service for Jay Grayson on May 21

Jay Grayson’s military honors’ service will be Friday, May 21 at 12 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery. All are invited.
