BACC President's Message:
Pandemic Shifts Consumer Preference to Shop Local!

The pandemic has changed consumer preferences and the way we want to shop. According to a survey by SCORE, one in four consumers say they will now purchase a majority of their gifts from small or local businesses.

As communities continue to experience the pandemic together, we realize that the “Shop Local” concept is much more than a slogan, it is a symbol of solidarity with our neighbors.

Just as we rallied together to get through the darkest days of 2020, we decided, together, we don’t want to see our small businesses fail. A National Retail Federation survey found in the past year, 49% of consumers practiced Intentional Spending, specifically making a purchase to support local business during the pandemic. A Nextdoor App survey found that 72% of its members believe they will frequent local business more often as a result of COVID.

Bottom line, local consumers have watched neighborhood businesses struggle, and they want to do something about it. Because we care about our hometowns, studies show that tipping has gone up, small scale food producers are seeing an increase in sales, and local residents are supporting local online shopping.

At the end of the day, it is our local small businesses that define the unique character of our communities and impact the quality of life here in the Barrington area. Let's stand together and Shop Local!
