“Peace be with you...”

In the past seven days, tragedy and crime and loss have struck the Elkhorn Community. There is no way to tip-toe around it. This cannot be ignored. However, I'm having a difficult time stringing together vowels and consonants to write anything of value. So in the absence of wisdom, I'll share this.

Last week Thursday, tragedy struck in the heart of Elkhorn. To the family, friends and co-workers of Gina and Emerson Weingart, you have our deepest sympathies. This horrific event has rocked our community and in its wake there is unspeakable heartache and sadness. Please know we're thinking of you.

To our downtown businesses who have rallied to support and lift up the Sports Page Barr and the families of the victims, we thank you. Who we are as a community shines bright during trials and tribulations and we continue to be amazed by the effort put forth to stand united during hardship.

To the City of Elkhorn Police Department, DPW, local EMS and to the Walworth County Sheriff's Department we are grateful for all of your efforts to find answers for the families that are hurting. We understand there is still a great deal of investigating and time required to get the job done. You have our thoughts and prayers as you all work together to seek justice.

Over the weekend the Elkhorn Community experienced more senseless crime. Again our sincere thanks to the men, women and K-9 units who responded to ensure the safety of our neighborhoods and homes. Thank you to our neighboring municipalities who worked together to apprehend those targeting our small town.

And on Monday we learned of another great loss. To our dear friends at the Walworth County Fairgrounds (WCF), we will greatly miss Peggy Frasier who has been a valued WCF employee and friend for the past 25 years. We're going to keep smiling, because we know that Peggy would be smiling, it's just who she was.

If you're still reading this, squeeze [hug] someone today and tell them something genuinely kind and thoughtful and encouraging. We all need it. Tell the people you love THAT you love them. Make new memories while reminiscing about the old ones. Enjoy what's in front of you: be it a friend, a new job or a giant piece of cake. And at every bend in the road, choose joy.
