When did you first come to The Grotto?
As a child. My mom loved The Grotto for its peace and serenity, and it was one of the places we always took visitors who came to Portland.
What was your first impression?
I was too young to remember.
What is your favorite place at The Grotto?
The Grotto altar area. It's so rustic and yet so beautiful with all the giant trees surrounding it.
What is your favorite place in the Upper Gardens?
St. Anne's Chapel. I remember as a child, especially the large rosary that used to be on the lawn outside the Chapel. The beads were huge and wooden, and the connecting links were made out of stout rope. It's not a favorite thing, but I also remember the giant spotted banana slugs that used to crawl the paths.
Do you have any special memories?
My high school, Marycrest, had our baccalaureate Mass at The Grotto.
Have you been to the Christmas Festival of Lights?
Yes, I enjoy The Grotto Carolers and can't believe how each year more and more lights keep being added without it looking tacky.
What do you love most about The Grotto?
Its peace and serenity, and the fact that it's located in an urban setting that transports you to a holy place the minute you enter the grounds.
