⌚Perception vs. Reality - time for a check?

When my daughter was six and going on 16, we attended a 30th birthday party for a cousin. Before the party, our daughter was very excited.

She picked out an outfit, did her hair just right, and demanded that we be at the party at just the right time.

The party was very nice, but after a bit, she asked us, “where are the teenagers?” “Huh?” She then repeated, “where are the teenagers?”

What happened? Somehow, she thought she was attending a Sweet 16 party with girls her own age. Well, at least the age she thought she was. Talk about a major disappointment.

What does this story teach us as managers? Our realities and our employees’ realities can many times be different. I hear a lot of stories of wonderful benefit plan rollouts that bomb, sound employment policies that employees resent, and more. Often, reasoning, facts, and explanations may not change our employees’ perceptions, so we need to alter our realities to accomplish our goals and then head out for ice cream.
