From the Desk of Fr. Mike Nacius, Pastor
There are times when I am asked, "Fr. Mike, what type of benefits do you get as a priest?" It may not be a surprise to you that I respond, "My retirement benefits are out of this world!!!!" Then again, I trust that we all long for and desire everlasting life with Jesus in God's heavenly home.

The Archdiocese offers priests many different benefits to help us and to support us in our service to the Church. These benefits do include health insurance, car insurance, salary and other benefits available to ordained priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Some priests lead pilgrimages as a means to spiritual growth in service to the Church.

One benefit is an annual retreat. It is up to the priest to select the time of the retreat that works with the ministry and obligations of his ministerial assignment. You can ask Fr. Mark when you see him on Sunday how his annual retreat was. He was away this past week from Sunday - Saturday at a monastery in South Carolina. I look forward to my annual retreat at Eastern Point Retreat House in Gloucester, MA. I will be away on retreat in November this year. Annual retreats are important in the life of the priest to take time in prayer and reflection.

The Archdiocese offers priests the opportunity to take a sabbatical every seven years of ordained ministry. A priest's sabbatical is to include prayer, study, and rest, as well as time with family and travel. I just celebrated my 30 th anniversary as a priest this past May. In these 30 years, I have been granted one sabbatical. I reached out to the Archdiocese and to Bishop Rojas asking for a sabbatical while remaining pastor of St. Mary's. In June I shared with the parish that a six-month sabbatical was approved for me while serving as pastor of St. Mary's. My sabbatical will be from January 1 - June 30, 2020. I am in the process of working on plans and details of the sabbatical. I ask that you pray that the sabbatical be a time of renewal and spiritual growth for me as your pastor.

Fr. Mark will be the Administrator while I am on my sabbatical. This will be good for continuity in the parish as Fr. Mark has been serving the parishioners and works well with the parish staff and parish leadership. We have been able to find some priests that will be able to celebrate daily Mass in support of the parish and Fr. Mark. The Parish Council and Parish Staff will be working together in preparation for the time I will be away from the parish. Upon completion of my sabbatical, I will return to the Church of St. Mary to continue to serve as your pastor. Thank you for your support and for your prayers.

This Thursday we begin this year's offerings for parishioners to participate in the Bible Study program. Thanks to Jeanne Hlavacek, Deacon Jack Herrmann, and Fr. Mark for their leadership of this program. If you have been waiting to be invited, take this as your personal invitation. Please reach out to the Parish Office to sign up for the morning or evening Bible Study Program that begins September 11. Walk-ins are welcome to the Parish Bible Study.

This Wednesday, September 11, the entire parish community will come together to celebrate the "Back to School" Mass at 10:00am. Mass will be offered at St. Mary's this day at 8:00am and 10:00am with adoration beginning following the School Mass. These and other "changes'' in the Mass schedule will be the exception and not the norm during the year. Please check the parish website for the current schedule of Masses offered at St. Mary's.

Next Sunday, September 15, is our 2019 Parish Picnic. Included in the day will be an outdoor Mass on St. Mary's Green at 12:00 Noon followed by a picnic for parishioners of all ages. If there is inclement weather, the Mass will be in the church. Please plan ahead, bring a lawn chair and a fellow parishioner or some friends to this celebration. Thanks to the St. Mary's Men's Club for coordinating this parish celebration.

On Sunday, September 22, the second collection is to support the Seminary system of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Thank you for your support of this collection in support of the local Church.

God bless you with hearts filled with gratitude and thanksgiving.

We need gift cards!

The Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program is running very low on gift cards. They use gift cards to purchase household items, food, toiletries, etc. for their clients (including our family, Claudina and children). St Mary's would like to help and collect gift cards for the Resettlement Program. The most useful gift cards would be for places like  Walgreens, Walmart, Target, Jewel, Aldi (all denominations welcome because a client advocate shops with the client.) In addition, they can always use  Ventra passes also (1 day, month-long, or a regular card with money loaded on to it).

You may place the gift cards in an envelope addressed to "Refugees" and deliver to the Parish Office, or place in the collection basket (by September 30th).

Thank you for all that you have done and continue to do for our family and the program, especially during these challenging times!
