Port of Oakland Summer College Internship Program

Port of Oakland Summer College Internship Program 2015

 

The Port of Oakland will begin accepting applications for its Summer College Internship Program on Tuesday, March 3 via the Port's "Internships" webpage. There are more than 15 different internship opportunities for college undergraduate and graduate students. The nine week internship program will start on Monday, June 15 and conclude on Friday, August 14. Preference is given to students from the local area.

PORT APPLAUDS WATERFRONT CONTRACT SETTLEMENT

The Port of Oakland applauds the tentative agreement of a new longshore labor contract for the West Coast waterfront. At the same time, it called for efforts to accelerate the movement of global container trade. The Port of Oakland did not participate in the contract negotiations. As a landlord port, it leases facilities to marine terminal operators who employ longshore labor. Read more here.

 
PORT PRESENTS CONTRACTING OPPORTUNITIES AT
Super Bowl 50 - Business Connect

The San Francisco Bay Area Super Bowl 50 Host Committee sponsored the 2nd Business Connect Workshop and Resource Expo to link local diverse businesses to Super Bowl 50 procurement opportunities at the Oakland Scottish Rite Center. The Port invited its 700 local certified firms to take part in Business Connect and shared information about Port contracting opportunities at the event.

Local Hire Program a Success!

BART and Port of Oakland celebrate the completion of the construction of the BART Oakland Airport Connector as well as the overall success of the project's Local Hire Program. The project exceeded the 50% goal for the Local Area Residents (workers residing in the four BART counties) with 70.33% participation. The project also exceeded the 20% goal for employing Project Local Impact Area (Oakland) Residents as the final percentage reported is 26.76%.

Healthy seabirds were released at the Port's waterfront
 
SEABIRD RELEASE AT PORT'S WATERFRONT

International Bird Rescue Research Center and Port volunteers had the joy of releasing twenty healthy rescued seabirds back into nature at the Port of Oakland's Middle Harbor Shoreline Park. The seabirds had been endangered by a mysterious San Francisco Bay goo. In this short video capturing the event, watch the birds flap their wings to freedom.

Our HR Director, Christopher Boucher, shared his insights with teachers and students on a wide array of careers opportunities at the Port of Oakland. The Port of Oakland is taking a big step forward in curbing pollution from harbor trucks. That's the view of two experts discussing the Port's air quality efforts in a new video.

 

Prof. Robert Harley, University of California, Berkeley, says rigs hauling containerized cargo in Oakland are newer and cleaner. Washington Burns, M.D., says this is helping Port neighbors cope with respiratory illness.

 

 
PORT CONTRACTING 101

There was a great turnout for the Port of Oakland's first Port Contracting 101 session at the Aquatic Center. Small and local business contractors learned what it takes to do business with the Port and how to find out when projects are released for bid. Topics included bidding, insurance, local hire, and wage requirements.
