The Port supports STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) education in our schools and we are pleased to be part of a new short film, "Code Oakland", by local documentary filmmaker Kelly Amis. The movie features social entrepreneurs who are determined to include Oakland youth of color as part of the technology revolution. The new film also exhibits how youth are being prepared to become future leaders in the tech industry. The Port Director of Social Responsibility, Amy Tharpe, participated in the Black Girls Code's Hackathon and is featured in the trailer.


 

  
  

MAYOR'S TOY DRIVE

The Port of Oakland was a proud sponsor and participant of the City of Oakland's Annual Mayor's Toy Drive having distributed gifts to over 10,000 children in the city. Distribution took place throughout Oakland between December 20 through the 23. The Port's support of the toy drive brought holiday cheer to the MORH Community Center in West Oakland and Tassafaronga Recreation Center in East Oakland.    
 
SPUR OAKLAND BEGINS ITS CITY TOUR AT THE PORT

The Port of Oakland was honored to kick off SPUR Oakland's day-long city tour in mid-December. Over 20 SPUR staff, led by newly appointed SPUR Oakland director Robert Ogilvie, visited the seaport to gain firsthand knowledge of Oakland's economic strengths. SPUR is a leading civic planning organization and respected for its independent and holistic approach to urban issues.

The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory findings show that a clean truck program initiated at the Port of Oakland in 2009 is paying off. Lab research findings are:
  • The median emission rate from diesel trucks operating at the Port declined 76% for black carbon
  •  The average emission rate for nitrogen oxides declined 53%
 
JACK LONDON SQUARE LIGHTS UP THE HOLIDAYS

The Port lit up Jack London Square for tree-lighting festivities and to kick-off the holidays. Friends and families had fun taking holiday pictures at the Port sponsored photo booth. The evening culminated with the lighting of the Mt. Shasta Fir Tree covered in sparkling lights and colorful ornaments.
  
PORT EMPLOYEE GIVING CAMPAING

Through the Port's 2014 Giving Campaign, employees pledged over $53,000 to local non-profits. In 2013, in addition to the Employee Giving Campaign, employees donated $244,000 and 7,000 volunteer hours to local charity organizations.
 
PORT EMPLOYEES PARTICIPATE IN MOVEMBER

Movember is a campaign that raises awareness for Men's health issues and shows support for the fight against prostate cancer. Men shave their faces at the start of November, then grow a mustache for the month. Movember has raised millions of dollars in support of Men's health programs around the world. The Port of MOakland team of 18 employees raised over $2,000.

Mc Clymond's High was one of the Port's latest stops for community outreach. The Port's Executive Director, Chris Lytle, along with staff attended Councilmember Lynette Gibson McElhaney's State of the District (District three), where residents met local leaders and learned more about the Port of Oakland and City Departments.

 

 
PRESCOTT-JOSEPH CENTER'S EVERY BREATH COUNTS

The Port of Oakland was a proud sponsor of the Prescott-Joseph Center's Every Breath Counts Fundraiser for the Breathmobile in Oakland. The Port's Communications Director, Mike Zampa, emceed the fundraiser which included an awards presentation and distinguished panel discussion on "Solutions to the Asthma Epidemic in Greater Bay Area Communities". The Prescott-Joseph Center owns and operates the Breathmobile Program which combats childhood asthma in West Oakland.
