Port targets 70 percent local contracting for airport project
June 8, 2016
 
The Port of Oakland has set a 70 percent local hiring goal for a $25 million renovation at Oakland International Airport. This means local businesses will benefit by receiving $17.5 million in construction project dollars. Small businesses will receive $4.25 million in contracts.  Oakland International Airport plans to upgrade its facilities to better handle passenger growth in the long term. Read more here

   
 
Asian Employees Association awards ten scholarships

The Asian Employees Association (AEA) at the Port of Oakland awarded ten high school students with scholarships totaling $8,500. The top award, which includes the Frank Kiang Scholarship, named after a late Port Board President, went to Kenna Chick. She plans to attend Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service, majoring in International Affairs. Among the attendees were Oakland Unified School District Board Director Aimee Eng, representative from Assemblymember Rob Bonta, representatives from the Office of Councilmembers Rebecca Kaplan and Abel Guillén, Port Board President Earl Hamlin, and Port Board Second Vice President Michael Colburno.
     

The Prescott Joseph Center Breathmobile on display

One of our long-standing community partnerships was on display in Jack London Square on World Asthma Day. The Prescott Joseph Center (PJC) Breathmobile is a 32-foot-long mobile clinic that visits Oakland schools to treat students with asthma. A Port community grant helped the PJC purchase the vehicle.

Luana Espana wins the first 
Women's Forum Biennial Training Scholarship

Community Affairs Assistant Management Analyst Luana Espana from the Social Responsibility Division will represent the Port in Bali next year. Luana won the first Women's Forum Biennial Training Scholarship from the International Association of Ports and Harbors. As part of her award, she'll present a paper in 2017 at the Association's World Ports Conference in Bali. 

   

Port of Oakland launches smart phone apps for harbor truckers

The Port of Oakland has introduced two smart phone applications that could transform containerized cargo handling at seaports. The apps, DrayQ™ and DrayLink™, employ Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS technology. They tell drivers how long they'll wait to enter marine terminal gates and how long their transactions will take. They give shippers a glimpse of the location and productivity of the drivers they hire.

Free special events at Jack London Square
Spring - Summer 2016

Free special events for the public at Jack London Square are happening now through summer. The outdoor activities are designed to be family-friendly and include a car show, bicycle fest, dancing lessons, and movies on the lawn. Read more here
   


CUESA becomes the new operator of 
Jack London Square Farmers Market

On Sunday, May 15, the Center for Urban Education About Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA) became the new operator of the Jack London Square Farmers Market. In addition to existing vendors, CUESA will introduce some new vendors and educational programming.
