This Sunday's Sermon and Song List

This Sunday's Sermon:

This Sunday we will begin a new sermon series called "Church Family Matters." It's called Church Family Matters because our church family matters and because we'll be discussing "matters" that pertain to our church. This week, we're going down to the basics and answering the question, "What is a church?" We'll explore Paul's letter to the Ephesians to answer that question. That might seem basic but the reality is that each of us can easily forget about or overlook the basic identity of the church and slowly lose our focus. Even worse, we can begin to tether our feelings about church to really fragile superficial things and this makes being part of the church more like a roller coaster ride than it does a seat at the family feast. Here's the definition we'll be unpacking from Ephesians to get you thinking about and ready for Sunday:

A church is a group of people, brought by God into saving fellowship with Him, through faith in Jesus, who regularly assemble for ministry to God, ministry to one another, and ministry to the world." Can't wait to worship with you on Sunday!

To get yourself ready to sing on Sunday you can start listening to the songs we'll be singing together:

  • Who You Say I Am
  • Gracefully Broken
  • Raise Up The Crown
  • Ancient Words
  • Christ The Lord Is Risen Today (He is Not Dead)

We created a playlist on Youtube in case you want to start listening today. You can find that by clicking HERE.

GriefShare Continues This Sunday

Discovery Church is hosting a special seminar and support group, Grief Share. The materials specifically address topics and issues for those who are grieving the death of a loved one. The content is Christ-centered and participants will find this to be a place where they can be around people who understand the pain of their loss. Our next Grief Share group began Sunday, January 8, 2023, at 6:00 PM and will meet weekly for 11 weeks. Please feel free to call the church office at (605) 689-2211 for more information about the group.

Wednesday Night Meals

Volunteers will provide the main course for Wednesday nights. You may turn in a receipt for the meal if you desire to be reimbursed. The meal begins at 5:45PM. Out Of The Dust Youth Conference!

Our culture has decimated God's good design for humanity. A recovery is desperately needed to understand what it means to be an image bearer of God. As He did with the first man, He's calling us Out of the Dust.

High Schoolers - Join us for a two-day conference as we explore who God made us to be, and how to answer the many voices seeking to redefine the nature of the pinnacle of God's creation.

With speakers including John Piper, Joe Rigney, Erik Reed, Neil Shenvi, Jonathon Woodyard, Abigail Dodds, Brandon Sutton, Larry Davis, and Nick Judd, we'll tackle many of the issues students struggle with today:

  • Our value in being made in the image of God - Why is every life important?
  • Our role in being made in the image of God - What are we made for?
  • Our calling in being made in the image of God - What does He want from us?
  • Our challenge in being made in the image of God - Where is the culture dragging us back to the dust?

There will be music from Journey Worship Co., practical breakout sessions, and much more!

Every Christian high schooler needs to be grounded in being able to answer these critical questions to survive and thrive in the years ahead. Sign up sheets are located on the bulletin tables. If you have any questions please contact Pastor Brandon.

Theology Summit

Saturday, February 11th

8:30am-12:00pm

What is a theology summit? Basically, we're going to gather and do a "deep-dive" into some biblical and vital topics for the church to understand in these crazy times. You may have wondered, "How have we reached the point where people think men can be women and women can be men?" You may have wondered, "How have we reached the point where churches ordain people that don't even believe the Bible is God's word?" Let's face it: we live in a time when culture is becoming increasingly unaware of what the Bible even says, not to mention how to read it. In times like this the church has an opportunity to show our confidence in God's word by studying it, thinking about, and discussing it together so that we can give a gentle, but confident defense of the faith we hold. Join us for our first ever "Theology Summit" as we discuss (1) Biblical View of Gender (2) God's design for men and women (3) God's design for the church.

We'll have brunch to get started and child care is provided. After we're done at Noon there is an informal time of fellowship as well. We hope to see you there!

Discovery's Annual Meeting & Potluck This Sunday!

Discovery church will hold their annual meeting on January 22nd directly following the service. If you consider Discovery your church home, we encourage you to attend. We will discuss the 2023 budget, eat lunch, and enjoy a time of fellowship.

Prayer in the Life of the Disciple

In the first minute of this wonderful 50 minute message on prayer Don Whitney says “We have a problem with prayer, we tend to say the same old things about the same old things.” What he is getting at is that prayer seems to be a problem for a lot of us because we find it boring and stale.

How do we change this? Don gives us a lot to think about and even better an approach to prayer than can bring new vibrancy to our prayer life. Give it a listen and may we stay humble and dependent on the Lord. Without Him we can do nothing that ultimately matters. With him even the smallest things will have eternal weight.
