"Preparing the Way"
I am so happy it will be Advent this weekend. Amidst the swirl of life -- hectic personally, abundant professionally, chaotic nationally/culturally -- I am in dire need of the Advent invitation to stop, slow down, and prepare. The days are darkening, and the language of Advent allows me to feel enriched by that and not saddened. "Draw in, be quiet, light a candle" is what I hear. And the promise that goes with it: "Do these things, prepare space and time for Me, and I will come!" We do not prepare to meet the Lord in vain: our God is One who will be found if we seek.

I've been ordering the materials -- greens and candles -- and working with our youth ministry leaders to have a table set up this Sunday for making and buying Advent Wreaths for our homes. I can't wait for the fresh evergreen scent and textures, the prospect of the lit candles on our dining room table.

This represents a double preparation: this is the beginning of our year of preparing to go on pilgrimage as the high school youth ministry to Taizé, France, next August. Advent 1 is the new year of the church, after all. After several years of exploring our youth formation and our parish's global engagement, we have collectively discerned that a trip to the ecumenical global village of Taizé will be a good way to deepen our knowledge of the world, of each other, and of the God who calls us into pilgrimage.

So come, let us prepare the way for God to be known to us again this year. Let us prepare in domestic details and in planning for the future. Let us find, in the swirl of life, the stillness of the small voice that is God, waiting for us.

See you in church,

The Reverend Rita Powell
Associate Rector
